    1970 A/C HELP

The A/C in this car operated with the ignition key at the time I purchased it. By this I mean that the fan ran in LOW speed and the compressor clutch was engaged. The car was purchased from the second owner with 29,000 miles. I replaced the fan relay and that silenced the fan but the compressor clutch still pulls in with the key and all systems OFF (thumb wheels and fan switch). I only have a wiring diagram and not a Shop Manual for trouble shooting. The compressor wire goes to a "thermal switch" that opens below freezing and from there to a item marked S 1 and S 2 but no indication as to their location. Any help would be appreciated on or off board. Thank you and Happy Holiday to all. Bill #20328

    Re: 1970 A/C HELP

I have a 70 with air and although I have not encounterd your problem in the past almost 30 years I have an idea where you might find the the problem. When the left air thumb wheel wheel is rotated it activates a relay switch when moved. I would suggest that if this relay was disconnected from its electrical connection that your air conditioner compressor would not operate. What does your air compressor do when you go past the bi-lever position to the heater and defroster positons?

It's alittle tonight but I will check tomorrow to see what happens in the heater and defrost operation in regard to the compressor. Where is the relay you refer to located????? Thanks, Bill

Bill the relay I am referring to is attached/mounted to the thumbwheel assembly. I have never had mine apart or out of the car, just the top of the console off. There was an article in Corvette Fever some months ago about our system and how to rebuild it with parts from ZIP Products.
