oil leak - need help - time is short

I've been posting about this oilpan leak off and on for months. I can't get it to stop. I am running out of time because Vettes on the boardwalk in Ocean City MD is only 2 weeks away.

    Here's the problem:

oil "weeps" from the lip of the oil pan, through the gasket and gasket sealant

Here's the history of the problem...

This is a new oil pan, new timing cover and new FelPro one piece gasket. This is the 6th time I have had it off the motor.

The old oilpan and old timing cover did the exact same thing.

After the motor was rebuilt, about 400 miles into it, it starts this leaking. At the time, I had a standard four-piece gasket. I replaced it with a Felpro one piece - still leaked.

I then replaced the timing chain cover - still leaked.

I then bought a new, correct oilpan from Corvette Central - still leaked.

I know that GM used two different sized gaskets. I have both. The old pan used the thinner one; the new pan uses the thicker one.

The timing chain cover was bought new from GM.

I have not overtorqued, nor under torqued the bolts.

I have tried using no sealant, a little sealant , and a lot of sealant (pictured below) and it still weeps from the front lip.

As the windstream from the fan catches the oil, it is lifting it up and spraying it all over the right side of the engine compartment, #2 plug boot, and all the way back to the starter.

I have systematically ruled-out any other locations for a leak.

It is definitely leaking from this spot and only this spot.

I don't know what else to do; I've never ever had a problem like this in 25 years of having Chevys.

    Help, running low on oxygen

    Mark

remove the harmonic balancer and install the fel=pro harmonic balancer sleeve. if the harmonic balancer is grooved from years of contact with the timing cover seal, this will cure your problem. mike

mark, i agree with mike---you should also check the pan seal groove in the timing cover,(the area where the front pan rubber gasket goes) ,sometimes they are too wide and need to be crimped a little tighter which would make the seal stand taller and provide more gasket crush---use ultra black or ultra gray sealant---i can't see in the picture it looks like a clear sealant---good luck---phil

It's like a hurricane inside the engine and the pressure build up is great, sounds like your not letting the air pressure out check the PV valve

The harmonic balancer seal is fine - completely dry there.

I will pull of the pan again and crimp the timing chain cover channel - really hope that is it! Thanks a bunch! Will post next week after I try that...

If all else fails and you're out of time I would try Lucas Oil's Stop Leak. I know it's not exactly the answer you are looking for, but I do know where in some instances it has worked. I'm a gasket/seal chaser, too. But if all else fails and you have no other avenue...

Mark....I would carefully check the harmonic balancer for a crack in the keyway. It sounds like you assume it's okay. I chased the same problem on a BB only to find that was the problem. Good Luck: Frank

                  Hi Mark

I had the EXACT same problem with my 1956 Chevy..I changed pan, cover and gaskets and it still leaked. I turned out to be the harmonic balancer. It had a groove around the shaft which made it leak and it first appeared to be the oil pan..I tried the sleeve but then eneded up putting in another balancer. It stopped the leak... If you want to go another route, they have a kit where you add this fluid and after a bit of leaking, you use a black light and it shows that fluid from where the leak started.

                  Good luck...John
