    62 VIN decoding

I understand that the last 6 digits after the "S" in my VIN is the production sequence number. What's confusing to me is thet there were about 14,600 '62s built, but my VIN ends with 109565. How can my car be the 109,565th built when there were only 14,600 built that year. Does it mean the 109,565th built since 1953? Or, did the sequence numbers not start with 000001?

Paul you don't read the 1 as part of the production sequence number, so your car is the 9,565th built.

On Corvettes, the first digit is simply a "place holder", and doesn't change; the production sequence number begins with the second digit. The standard six-digit serial number/VIN format was developed to accommodate normal high-volume assembly plant operations, where each plant built up to 250,000 cars per year.

It's interesting that even at the high volume plants, the first numeral of the 6 digit sequence number was still a 1 (at the beginning of production). Hence, a passenger car with a sequence number of 250000 was really the 150,000th vehicle off the line.

This is just a guess, but perhaps early punch card or vintage computer systems would not recognize a 0 as the first character, therefore the first car (of any model) had to be 100001....(??)
