    Gas Caps 58 - 62 confusion

Acording to the Restoration Guide in early 58 the Fuller Emerson cap was used and in 59 - 60 the Standt and Eaton caps were for optional use. Also in March of 61 the Fuller Emerson cap was the only cap used through 62. Which tells me the the correct cap for early 58 - 62 should be Fuller Emerson. Certainly the Fuller Emerson cap for 61 - 62. The only possible exception would be 59 - 60 because of the optional use.

So why does the Judging Manual say that all three caps are acceptable for 61 - 62? Please help.

      Donald--
Exactly why do you say that--please give specifics.
      Thanks,

        Re: Gas Caps 58 - 62 confusion

The term 'opt' was used in the AIM to indicate alternate source suppliers whose parts were deemed equivalent to the primary. Sometimes GM binned them together under a common part number with suppliers mixed in inventory. Other times (apparently for tracking visibility), individual suppliers were given separate PN's and inventoried separately. So, for '58L through '61E any of the three gas caps could appear on a production vehicle...

Just so you know--and I don't say this from an ego standpoint at all---when Noland's book first came out, I sent him more than a page-long of errors that were contained in his book. It's a good book (not THE good book, by the way), but far from infallible when it was printed (many years ago) and even more fallible today. The NCRS judging manual is a more accurate document than that book, and cheaper, too.

                Besides...

there is no 'Noland' judging organization or 'Noland' award to win. So, if you're looking for NCRS judging recognition, the NCRS JG is more likely to be the authoritive source vs. Noland's book...

I appreciate your frankness Mike. Nolan had a great opportunity to dig around in the GM archives. We learned a lot from his efforts! There are also a number of things in his 63-67 restoration book that now appear to be inaccurate as well. Sometimes I wonder if like Hollywood, the facts were "enhanced" a bit just to flesh out an interpretation of the real story. (ie. 63/4 hardtop notch/door handle interference theory)

It's still a great resource and I'd recommend it anyway.

I think that it would be near impossible for anyone to figure everything out.

In my case I found that Nolan stated something about welded/riveted wheels because of what he saw on a GM drawing. However if you really look at the drawing and all the changes you will see the method of attachment was revised in the revision block after the 62's went out of production. So a change was made for service and he missed the actual method of attachment during production. I am sure there are many more like that. What is needed is a new edition with all the chages that have been found. Perhaps Nolan would allow someone to re issue the book if he does not have time for it?
