Yes they are the same. The bore dia on the gasket is 4.080 across the 12:00 - 6:00 span and 4.070 accross the 3:00 - 9:00 span.

Haven't checked the bore on the block yet.

You and Scott are .004" off, which is more than what production tolerance should be. I figure +/- one thou, two at most.

The parts of the gasket that compress are the formed contours. I don't think the bulk material will compress measurably under head bolt clamping load, so measuring any unformed area of the gasket should be a good surrogate for compressed thickness.

Make sure you measure in several places and get consistent readings.

The paint is probably there to protect the plain carbon steel material from corroding before use, and it might also help with sealing, and the film is probably no more than one thou thick.

It could be that the 711 is a service only number and was not used in production. That's why I'm looking for anyone who takes apart what appears to be an original engine, so the gasket can be hopefully IDed with a part number and measured for compressed thickness.

Duke, I looked again at the head gasket and could not find a number but its pretty grubby around the edges. When I get a minute I will clean it off and look again. I can send it to you if you like. As I said, I'm very sure that its original.

There's probably nothing more I could see than you, but don't throw them away. Measure the thickness, and check for marks.

Scott and Jim - do your new 711 gaskets have a part number or other ID?

I have both the originals with part numbers and new GM replacements. I will re-measure them this evening. ....in several spots....

Thanks, please post the part numbers, too, and restate your car year.

Take measurments in several areas including the "fire ring" and some areas that were originally flat, not formed.

                    ok then....

Both my originals and new GMs are .022 thick. My originals are from a 65 300hp. The heads have been off, so what I thought were originals are probably period replacements. The originals are stamped 3830711 with GM underneth on one end and Mc6631 on the other ear.

                      Re: ok then....

Well, that's interesting. Tracy's were McCord 6631 and yours have BOTH the GM and McCord numbers. Maybe McCord was a vendor to GM.

Are the new 3830711s also stamped Mc6631?

Tracy - can you take another look at yours and see if you can find 3830711 stamped on them in addition to the Mc6631?

                        Re: ok then....

Duke, the new gasket do NOT show the Mc stamp. There is one small stamp which appears like a misformed "S".

                          Re: ok then....

The misformed S is probably a vendor ID code, but I have no idea who it stands for. Being as how this part has been in production for 40+ years, there have probably been several vendors over the years.

                            Duke,
I took a couple more readings for you as requested. All locations were .022" and mine appear to look like Jim's with just some kind of "S" looking letter stamped on them. The only numbers were via the computer printout on the sealed plastic bag.
