    Timing???

I thought I might mention how I time my engines in my 55 and 67 with all the talk about timing and vacuum advance , First I don't trust the harmonica balance ( the outer ring could move)or the vacuum advance . So after the engine is warmed up and knowing it fires on all 8 OK, Carb working good. I loosen the Dist. Hold down then turn the Dist, one way or another while snapping the Carb rod full open, I do that while each time moving the Dist. Till I get NO hesitation snapping the Carb full open . Then I lock down the Dist clamp and call it DONE.
Now am I wrong ? Been timing my Corvettes that way for 40 years , could not afford a timing light when I was young and my Corvettes and cars run great with no pinging!!

        Re: Timing???

Let them say what they want: the bottom line is if it works, it works !
Can't argue with that, especially since it hasn't failed you in 40 years.
It also compensates for slipped harmonic balancers and vacuum advances.
When you use this method, do you leave the vacuum advance connected or do you disconnect it. I am assuming you move only the distributor and leave everything else hooked up; am I correct?

            Re: Timing???

Well I kinda do it that way. I loosen the dist and then bring thr Rs up a little and advance the dist till I can feel a slight viberation at the carb ( kinda like feeling the viberation on your fender when useing the old on car wheel balancers) then back it off a whisker. The viberation at the carb has to be a little pre-ignition. I do all the old cars this way and they all run great. I started doing this in 1976 when I forgot my timing light for my drag car, and it ran the best it ever did.

Had to chime in! I've not used a timing light in about 43 years. High School shop teacher, Mr Kern made us use them. I like to let my ears tell me when to stop advancing timing. Al W.

doubt toney stewart's, dale jr's or rainbow fairy's(#24) engine builders rely on their ears to time the nascar engine's timing.i'll stick with the trusty timing light(which is significantly more OBJECTIVE than the ears) to set timeing on my sbcs and bbcs(which have all been degree'd in to account for any possible rotation of outer sleeve on harmonic balancer). mike
