    68 Carb. Idle Solenoid

Can anyone suggest a good source for obtaining the bracket that mounts the idle solenoid to the side of a Rochester carb on a 68 smallblock with A/C ?
    Thank you,
    Kurt

Kurt I have seen very few of the brackets, but I would look on the "big" GM cars, Olds, Pontiac, Caddy, etc. I am not sure, but I think that they may have the bracket

      Dick,
      Thanks for the reply.
Are you saying that this part is not currently available from any aftermarket vendors? I was hoping to buy a new one as I have a new solenoid but not a bracket.
Am I correct in ASSUMING that my 68 with smallblock and A/C requires this solenoid? I t was not on the car when I purchased it in 1972 but may have been removed as the prior owner installed a Holley Dual Feed Double Pump carb.
      Thanks for any additional info.

Yes, I don't know of anybody with a reproduction bracket/clamp in their catalog. Just finding a 1114418 (factory original solenoid NEVER available through service) versus the more common 1114421 solenoid that was used in '69 production and available through service is a real chore!

The last time I needed one of these suckas, I visited local carb shops and rummaged through their 'misc parts' bins to get one. Took 3-4 stops/shops before I got lucky....

          Re: 68 Carb. Idle Solenoid

          Jack,
I have the 1114421 solenoid but no way of attaching it to the carb so I will need to start hunting for the bracket since it appears not to be for sale.
Can you confirm for me that my smallblock with A/C does indeed require this solenoid as at one time I was told by someone thta only big block cars used this device.
          Thanks,
          Kurt

            Kurt-----

I don't think that the bracket and solenoid were used for any 1968 small blocks. In fact, I'm not even sure that big blocks with C-60 used them for 1968.

              Re: 68 Carb. Idle Solenoid

              Joe,
I had heard, don't know how accurate the info is, that all GM cars with A/C used them to prevent stalling. I had previously thought this solenoid wa sonly used for big block cars but was recently told it was used for all engines, small block and big block, with A/C.
You certainly know light years more about this stuff than I do. What suggestions have you for me to determine if I do or do nto need this item for my car to make it correct. I would be happy if I did NOT need it since it looks to be impossible to get the parts.
What would prevent the engine from stalling when activiating the A/C or is that not an issue.
I defer to your knowledge on this.
              Thanks,
              Kurt

                Re: 68 Carb. Idle Solenoid

The engines will still idle OK without the solenoid, it only pulls the idle down by about 100 RPM with the A/C compressor on. There is a nice picture of the bracket on a 1969 350 HP in the Vette Vues photo book.

From my 1973 parts book, this solenoid WAS used on the 327 and 427 1968 A/C Corvettes and 1969 350 and 427 A/C Corvettes - good luck finding them, they were a part most mechanics tossed into the trash ( I have been looking for several years).

                    Kurt,

The bracket for this solenoid is made in reproduction, but only for BB as far
as I know. I have one or two of them here. I can't tell you if SB & BB
brackets are the same, but I know someone here can. If by chance they are the
same bracket, look for item from eBay seller: wwwheartbeatcitynet

                    Good luck!

The bracket and clamp were specific to carburetor rather than engine. So, for example, Q-Jet carbs for a particular model year would use the same bracket and clamp regardless of whether it was a big block or small block application. Some of the Corvette pieces were unique to Corvette although I don't recall, at the moment, which were unique and which were used for other apps.

                        Steve,
Can you perhaps post a picture of the brackets you have so I can see what it is I am looking for.
The picture in the AIM was not very helpful
                        Thanks

I have a picture of a original 400 hp with the $5,000 bracket and solenoid if anyone cares to see that. I have seen a few on small blocks over the years, mostly on untouched? cars.

The one I bought was for L88/ZL1

I bought one from them a year or two ago, it is for the auto trans 396/375 and the COPO L88/ZL1 engines with the TH400 trans. It looks almost like the forward engine lift bracket with a solenoid attached. Only works on the high rise BB intakes.
