    67 radiator cap from ebay

I received the original and correct radiator cap I "won" on ebay. It looks good strictly from an appearance standpoint. However, I took it to a credible auto shop which I have done business with for 26 years now and it pressure tested to zero. The seller stated in his ad that it "still holds 15 lbs" and in an email from myself addressing this subject point blank, he stated that it was pressure tested on an ac delco tester and did test ok at 15 lbs.

On one hand I am contacting him to see how he wants to handle corrective action...we will see if his integrity tests at 15 lbs or zero. Meanwhile I am wondering about rebuilding the cap. I don`t see rebuild kits in either Paragon or Corvette America. I am wondereing if I buy one of their caps and steel the spring and or rivit if necessary if this is rebuildable. I am asking for any thoughts or direction on saving this cap.

    thx, richard

Pressure testing a rad cap can be a bit 'tricky'... Most shops have a Stant tester that you install an adaptor on, put the target rad cap on the adaptor and pump away while watching the hand tester's pressure gauge. The validity of this test relies on how well the adaptor installed/sealed to the hand pump + how well the rad cap installed/sealed to the adaptor.

Sometimes you can get Jeckyl/Hyde test results if the rad cap's gasket isn't nice an moist + it's been firmly attached to the pump adaptor whose sealing lip is nice and clean.

But, those who have experience in using these testers generally know the correct proceedure for putting things together...

On buying a repro rad cap and transferring its pressure relief mechanism onto your 'original' cap, why not simply use the repro rad cap as-is? One feature of the repros that differs from the factory originals IS the configuration of the pressure relief mechanism.... So, you'd be throwing out one aspect of a 'correct/original' rad cap to make your 'original' work with the transplant approach...

I would use the cap for judging as it is to see if it passes the test of judging it may not even be correct for your car. Take it off when judging is over and it won't need to hold pressure. I don't think rebuilding caps where you mess with the rivet is something for the handyman type as some special tools may be needed. As for your Ebay buying of the cap it was probably sold as is unless he stated it holds 15#s.

Buy and use a new cap for driving purposes. Install your 'correct' cap when having the car judged.

          Richard,

          1. What's the eBay item number? Do you have a link? Or, for what I'm after, do you have a picture of it or link to a picture?
          2. If it cosmetically looks good, use it only fur judging and use a new cap of any design for driving.
          3. There are a couple of radiator cap restorers out there. Some do a very nice job, but it is not a job for the do-it-yourself'er.

John Pirkle (706-860-9047) rebuilt my original cap and did a very nice job. Just make sure you have a cap that is correct for your car before you spend money getting it rebuilt.

I also agree with the other posters that possibly your cap is fine the way it is. Inspect the rubber gaskets carefully (there are two of them) and if they look good, have the cap retested.
