The more I learn, the less I realize that I know. I agree on the printed applications, but we have seen several 327's with the solenoid. Go figure. No rhyme or reason.

      Dick,
I think we would have to agree that the 1968 Corvette is the most misunderstood year of all. Particularly the a/c equipped cars.

        Kurt,
Does your car have the provisions in the a/c wiring harness for the solenoid?

Yes, but the prior owner cut the wire off where it exits the harness becasue he removed the Rochester and repalced it with a Holley Dual Feed Douuble Pump carb whihc I have since discarded and replaced with the correct 7028219 Rochester.

            Kurt,
If you feel confident this is how your car was originally configured, then you will have to get the brackets to put it back to its original state.

Much easier said than done. I am not willing to pay $850.00 for a bracket,

I hear ya! That is a bit steep!

One thing I've been wondering, on a 68 small block with a/c, how exactly is the solenoid wiring harness run?. Is it similiar to the big block? The AIM shows the big block harness routed from the fuse panel along the backside of the tach/speedo thru the back-up lamp grommet hole and across the top of valve covers where it is held in place with 2 clips that appear to be screwed to the top of the valve covers.

                  Bryan,
I can't tell how it is supposed to be run on a small block as the wire was cut at the point where it exits the harness at the firewall behind driver side valve cover of the engine.
I believe the wire was green but am not sure as I am in the house at the time and will need to examine the harness closely to be sure. I can't even be 100% sure that the cut wire I am looking at was in fact the wire intended to power the solenoid but since everything else works and I have no other cut wires I am assuming that this was the wire intended originally for the solenoid.
I know that is a lot of assumptions.

Anybody got any insight on how the 68 small block with a/c is supposed to be configured? With or without idle solenoid setup? Plastic radiator shroud or metal radiator shroud? HT or HP engine suffix?

I know this is a ebay ad but, here is another example of a 68 small block with ac. Anybody see any signs of a solenoid setup? It also has the metal radiator shroud. FWIW, from all the picture examples that I have been saving this appears to be the norm.

                          Bryan,
The eBay car is a 300 horsepower car.
My 68 L79 smallblock (350 horsepower) with A/C has fiberglass radiator shrouds, copper radiator similar to the ones used for the big block, does not have a radiator expansion tank, and the valve covers are flash chrome from the factory. It would appear that there are significant differences between small block 68s with A/C dependant on which engine the car is equipped with. Since mine also has power brakes & steering, the engine suffix is HP.

                            Piece of cake...

We've already covered the function of the valve: de-energized it routes vac from the input to the output nipple; energized it routes vac from the input to the vent nipple. So, you should be able to take it from there, eh?

I think you'll find the inlet nipple is metal, on the side of the valve where the electrical terminals are. On the back of the valve is a 2-nipple plastic line. I'll bet you find the outlet runs at right angle to the line and the vac vent is the distant end of the plastic line.

Original valves had a square plastic foam block glued to the vac vent, so there wasn't a question of which was which. But, go fire your valve and confirm! The inlet will be the only nipple that connects the ouput(s) when the solenoid is engergized or de-energized. The outlets will become obvious based on solenoid energization....

                              Jack,
I am easily confused but, are you talking about a tach solenoid valve for the wiper system or a idle solenoid valve for the a/c system?

                                Kurt,
I will agree that the 68 sb a/c cars sure are some strange birds. My car is a early build date car of Nov. 16, 1967. Has the L-79, pb, ps, 4-speed 3.73 rear and has an engine suffix of HT.
