Dr. Chuck, That's what my 63 has. Same support as yours and I got dinged. Do you think yours was original or is it an old GM replacement? Thanks, John

      Re: Midyear hood supports

      Hi John:

I've been following this thread but I need clarification on where to look for the so-called "black washer." My 67 hood support, which I believe to be original, has the number but no Atwood. I looked for something resembling a black washer and did not see it, but I would like clarification on what location/function to look for.

Joe, As far as exactly what to look for I can only tell you that this Atwood hood supports are not an exact science. I say that only because from the large number of emails and posts I have received I see I have created a monster. Although we hobbiest would like to see more concise and accurate info on this part I find that at the present time this is not possible. Poor answer at best and I apologize for that. As far as your 67 hood support goes Peter Lindahl and a host of others have stated that their original hood support does not contain a so called blackened washer. As far as being stamped with 16077 and the Atwood name and company address I find this to be a hit and miss event. Distinguishing between an over the counter replacement and the "real deal" is confusing at best also because so many have written in telling me that their "Atwood" support contains a part number but no logo. Others have said they have the logo but no 16077 number. The black washer theory is vague at best as far as imput I have received. In fact I am still waiting for someone to report the existence of this blackened washer on an original unmolested part. I don't believe I have heard from a 65 owner though. So if you read the above you see I don't know all the facts and it appears no one else does either. Now I found out some personal info about the hood support on my own 63. Traced the part back to 1970 and found out it has not been replaced since that time. But it only has the 16077 and no Atwood logo. Logo means Atwoood, Rockford, ILL. It's going to take a lot more research to find out what is going on. Basically if you have a hood support with no # or logo you can assume it's a replacement from Chevrolet. But if you have one that has some kind of identification on it you can assume that it is OEM. Be careful though when you assume. Thanks, John
