C-1 Battery

The 58-60 Technical Info. Manual and Judging Guide appears to have a contradiction on page 67 in the description of Battery & Cables Sect. 18. The sketch showing the orientation of the top of the battery and the accopanying text conflict with eah other. The text describes the Delco medallion side of the case along with the 2SMR53 and CAT NO 458 ( contained on the top) as facing the firewall yet the sketch shows the CAT NO 458 facing the front of the car. Both can't be right. I am hoping the text and not the sketch is correct.The text description is consistent with my battery. Can someone please clarify ? Thanks in advance.

Dwight, I believe your manual may be out of date. The illustration in the current version is correct and so is the verbage. This is the text from the most recent revision.

"Battery is installed with terminals facing forward; negative post inboard. Delco OEM battery used for 1958 through 1960 is model 2SMR53 and that designation appears on the medallion side face, with 'CAT. NO. 458' contained on the top. Centerline between terminal posts runs within visible top covers showing through tar. Battery has a hard rubber case and rubber separators. DELCO medallion on side of case is unpainted and faces the firewall."

"2SMR53" is embossed on the same surface as the Delco logo. The "Cat. No. 458" is on the top surface of the battery at the opposite edge. If your battery has "2SMR53" both on the Delco embossed surface and on the top edge (instead of "Cat. No. 458"), and that mark is on the top edge directly above the embossed Delco suface (which faces the firewall), then the battery is an earlier style, used on 1956 Corvettes.

Thanks Bernard, my manual is about 4 years old. Thanks for validating that the illustration in my manual, and not the text, is incorrect.
