I am restoring a '59 and have just noticed the axle pinion has lost about 5 teeth. Do I need to replace both gears or just the pinion? Is this a specialist job? I am based in England and thought I might be able to obtain replacements from a donor axle. Did any other cars use this axle? Is there a general description I should use? Thanks for any replies - Mark (the new guy!)

Re: C1 Solid Axle
Mark, replace both the ring and the pinion. You should be able to get gears from numerous sources. Getting teeth to mesh correctly and making sure specs are met might be a job for a shop. Some people are comfortable setting up gears,I don't have the measuring equipment to check tolerances.Welcome to NCRS.

Re: C1 Solid Axle
It's pretty well accepted that ring and pinon should be changed as a matched pair to get optimum mesh between teeth.
You might want to check with NCRS UK Chapter Judging Chairman, Tom Falconer, who runs Claremont Corvette on the availability of good used original parts that are in-country. Europeans (including the UK here) tend to prefer numerically low ratio rear ends (petrol prices) and often convert their imports from performance to highway cruising profile discarding the original rear gear sets in the process.
The last time I walked through Tom's parts 'cave' (this summer), there WERE rear axle assys 'hanging' around. You can reach Tom at (0634) 244444 and pass along a Stateside 'Hi Guy' from me when you call...- Top
