    67 Parking Brake Handle

Has anybody ever removed the plastic hand grip from the handle in order to rechrome? OR does anybody know of someone providing this type of restoration service? I would buy a repro but the all balck version, have a very nice handle but the chrome could be a whole lot better.

    Thanks

      Mine fell off

On my 67 all black handle, the button popped off and then the plastic handle comes with it. Found that the button is either pressure fit or glued into the end of the button shaft.

To put it back on, I used "Goop" on the end of the shaft, pushed the button back on and held the spring tension off the shaft and button for a day to take a set. Did the trick.

They tell me that my all black handle is not correct for my very late 67 and it should have the chrome on it. I know it to be my original brake handle. Must be another one of those Judging Manual anomolies, or one with my car.

            Re: 67 Parking Brake Handle

Jeff Salz (248-645-5953) restores parking brake assemblies. I believe he advertises in the Driveline. He can even replate those pesky chrome areas on the plastic handles that have the crome strip and tip. Consider yourself lucky if your handle does not, because you get to avoid that whole problem.

If all you want to do is remove the plastic grip so that the metal handle can be replated, it is pretty easy to do. Disassemble the mechanism and remove the push button assembly so that all you have to work with is the metal handle with the plastic grip on it. As I recall, the plastic grip is just a light press fit, so you can slide the grip off by carefully applying pressure. Just be sure that you don't damage the plastic when you do this.

If your original 67 plastic grip is in good shape, you should be very careful to protect it. The details of the hatched areas on the sides were unique for 1967 to 1969. The 1970 and later design is the one that is the more commonly found NOS service replacement, and the reproductions that are available are also the later design.

Re: 67 Parking Brake Handle JOE

Hi Joe how do you remove and replace the push button after you have removed the assy from the car. Is the button pressed or glued on the rod? Thanks Phil 8063

Re: 67 Parking Brake Handle JOE

                  Hi Phil:

I guess I did not remember the sequence quite right in my previous post. I took one of these handles apart a couple years ago and thought I remembered that the button comes out before the grip comes off.

Tonight I pulled out my box of parts and looked at them again. It appears that the plastic grip, with the button, spring, and button pushrod, can be pulled off the chrome handle as an assembly. After that it is easy to remove the button from the button pushrod.

The photo below shows the four parts in the grip/button assembly. The button is just pressed onto the pushrod, so you should be able to pull it out using some slight twisting motion on the pushrod. The pushrod is more accessible after you remove the grip assembly from the chrome handle. As can be seen in the photo, the chrome handle has no specific retention features that keep the grip attached. The grip is just a light press fit on the handle.

                    You had me wondering, Joe

Whether there was something wrong with my parking brake handle. Although mine is not off the car.

I can take my parking brake grip and pull it up the top of the button against the spring action of the button. My grip is only held on by the press fit of the button to the rod.

Plastic is plastic, and once you break a press fit in plastic, I thought it wise to glue it back on. I pushed it on tight with the "goop", then taped the button down to the grip, so the spring wouldn't push the button off again while the glue set.

                    Thanks for the photo.

                    Regards,

I believe that early '68's also received the all black grip. Also, I thought '68 was the last year to have the original cross-hatch pattern?

                        Phil -

My June-built '67 (20401) has the original park brake handle assembly, and the handle is all black too.

                          Re: Chrome/no chrome........

                          Phil,

Yes.....chrome/no chrome handles appear right through the 67 production year......BUT...there are definite VIN. patterns and several senior 67 Interior Judges have some knowledge collected over the years from original unrestored cars.I think full credit is given for all black handles even if the original was chromed. The high dollar restorers have been stripping old chrome off original handles for years and simply painting them black.

Hi Rick thats true, its would seem very hard to find a pattern all the way thru production. If anyone else who has a black handle please post your numbers Thanks Phil 8063
