On orig 63 to 67 cars with tinted windshields does the tint band on the upper part of the shield flare wider at the ends or does it keep the same width all the way across. The JM said repro shields the width stays the same is this correct Thanks Phil 8063

Re: C2 Tinted windshield
Phil,
I think that there will be much variation in color and shape of the tint band. My original 1965 windshield has a widening at the ends. I have seen some repops with a uniform band, and others with a widening band. Most are uniform, tough. The windshield that I have installed on my car looks very similar to the original. There is a slight difference in the tint color, though. Tha shape of the band is "dead nuts on".
What the "book" says, is probably true in MOST, but not ALL cases.

Re: C2 Tinted windshield Thanks Joe
Phil,
I do not; however, if the "book" says "the tint band widens at the ends", then it had better do that!
I can tell you with certainty, that some reproduction windshields are noticeably different than originals in this aspect. As I said, my repop windshield looks almost exactly like my (scratched) original. Apperently there is variation in production. If you look at enough inventory before buying, you'll probably find one that looks right.

Re: C2 Tinted windshield
on the repo windshields i've bought over the years(OEM), i've noticed that the tint/non-tint junction is rather sharply dematcated . with the originals, the tint and non-tint areas seem to blend together much more gradually.mike- Top

Re: C2 Tinted windshield Thanks Joe
Phil, One of the members of our Pittsburgh Chapter bought a new repro tinted w/s for his midyear and was very dissatisfied. At Marlborough I know that the exterior judges were dinging the boys on some of the repro tinted glass. I looked at a couple and thought to myself they looked like SR glass at best. I imagine though someone must be making good exceptable tinted glass. John- Top

Re: Thanks Guys for in put Phil 8063
To shed some light on this subject, A windshield is made up of two pieces of glass sandwiching/laminating a plastic interlayer(PVB - polyvinyl butyral). The reason the shadeband varies in width has to do with the way in which the PVB (plastic interlayer) shaping equipment works as well as the specific glass company specifying it. When a windshield is bent, you must shape the PVB to avoid puckering, and the shaping occurs with heat over a conical shaper wich actually stretches the PVB and makes the shadeband even across the radius and top roofline of the part. The PVB comes on a roll with the shadeband printed on the top 4 inches or so of the roll, the only way to get that smiley face in the PVB is to stretch and shape it which is what most glass makers do....back in the 60's those shapers did not exist and the PVB was not stretched, therefore the band is wide on the ends and narrow in the center. Some makers today use less and some use more stretch, but very few dont stretch at all... In regards to the fade and the color, that all is just UV degradation of the PVB, over time the shadeband loses its sharp edge as well as its color fades from navy blue to a bronze color. Remember the glass is tinted green, th ePVB is clear with a blue shadeband, Hope that all helps you...the biggest difference in the windshields would be the thickness, a major fit issue on C1's by the way.Dino Lanno- Top
