    '76 Gas Tank Metal Shroud

Does anyone know when GM started installing a metal covering over the top of gas tank and what purpose it is supposed to serve. The one on this '76 we are doing a body off on is rusted to bits. I'm thinking we will just not replace it unless it has some special purpose I'm not aware of.

Scott, being an owner of both a '74 "leaded gas" Corvette and a '75 "no lead" gas Corvette, this shield was used on '75-'77 Corvettes only, along with the rubber bladder tank which was used these three same years. I would guess that it's just an added rear collision safety shield. The Ford Pinto fiasco probably helped create it. When I re-did the tank assembly and fuel hoses I also left it off.
