Numbers for hardtop on 1972 Vette

    Hi Guys,

This is my first port here. I just became a member of the dutch (and of the American) NCRS. I am the owner of a 1972 Convertible. My vin number is:1Z67K2S507234.

Here is my question; There is a hardtop for sale in Holland. It has these numbers: big letters: 48466 small letters: 7648 112. These codes are on the inside of the top, below the window. There is no code in the window.

Can anyone please tell me if these numbers are matching for my car??

    Thanks in advance.

    Best regards,
    Fred

Hardtops accompanied the body through paint and the few I've taken apart to restore had the body job number written in grease pen on the inside, beneath the headliner. Of course, once fully assembled, that detail is NOT visible for judging.

Typically, judges go by interior/exterior cosmetics (geometry/configuration of the header bar lock adjustment bolt, configuration of rear deck attachment, presense/absence of rear bow trim plates, and date code of rear glass) to determine 'apparant' factory authenticity...

Of all the Corvette hardtops, the Shark version is my favorite. It has REAL glass for the rear window making it more durable than the earlier Plexiglass and fit/seal is far superior to the earlier cars.

I go through two phases each year with my '71. Drive the car in the summer with the top down until fall turns to winter forcing me to install the hard top. Then, enjoying the cockpit noise reduction and added headroom so MUCH that spring turns to summer heat forcing me to remove the hardtop!

Fred - i think the only visible number to look for is the date code of the glass which apparently lacks. It normally consists of 2 letters - 1 for the month and 1 for the year (which should be an 'Y' for 1972).

Your car was built in the calendar year 1971, so the glass code should have an "N."

          1968 vs 69 vs 70

Didn't the 1968 hardtop have the smaller size threads on the bolts that bolted it to the rear deck lid? Then in late 1969 or so, didn't they also add a center hold down bolt in the rear deck lid?

Yes, the first version of the Shark HT tried to achieve the 'ultimate'--simply drop in using the same fastening points as the ST. Apparently that design didn't work and the extra tie-down point in the middle of the rear was added...
