    C3 rear clicking

I recently finished a complete mechanical overhaul of my 71 LS5 drive train. Rebuilt engine, Rebuilt trans, new clutch & pp, rebuilt differential. All done to original specs, nothing fancy here. The only thing I didn't do personally is the trailing arms and they were done by a very reputable shop.

Went for a long drive today and after stopping for gas I heard a "clicking" sound coming from the left rear when making a left turn. At first I thought I picked up a stone in the tire. Stopped to check, no stone. Went to a parking lot and did some tight circles. Clicking noise happens only when turning left and comes from the left rear. Seems to be once per tire revoulution. Does not do it when making right turns.

Car has about 150 miles since overhaul. I did use the posi additive in the diff and it does not sound like clutch noise to me.

    Ideas?

Other then this, the car runs great!

I would add another bottle of additive it's an easy job and may make your problem go away. I have had to add two bottles more than once.

Do you have anti rattle clips on the rear brake pads?

Drain the rear end lube totally. Add 100% silicone rear gear lube. Your noise will be eliminated.

          Tom------

Remove the wheel trim rings and see if you still have the noise.

Since the clicking is only during left turns this probably is not your problem. After having the bearings replaced under factory warranty on my 70 and low speeds with the window down on the passenger side (factory air) I would hear a clicking noise. Thought it was the the ralley wheel trim. Turned out to be the brake pads moving in the caliper. The brake disc rivets were removed to remove the disc from the spindle at the Chevrolet dealership and this resulted in excessive runout. Bairs is the only rebuilder I know of that rivets the brake disc to the spindle like our cars left the factory.

                Jim and all,

Bairs did the arms for me and I am quite pleased with their work.

I did remove the center cap and found no stones. I alos verified that the trim ring was secure. I removed it and re-installed it just to be sure.

I added two bottles of GM posi lube when I assembled the rear.

Last night I jacked the rear of the car up and spun the wheels by hand to see if I could hear anything and all seemed well.

I won't be able to go driving until Sunday again and then I'll do some more trouble shooting.

                Thanks for the help!

                Tom

Has your daughter had any real wheel time of your bueatiful 72? I remember letting my son do some driving of my 70 with me in the car. His senior prom night he picked up his date and drug the mufflers off his 70 Camaro. He comes rumbling into the driveway with his date in her prom dress. I let him have my 70 Corvette for the evening.

You need to do more than just remove the trim rings, check for security, and re-install. Try actually driving the car with the trim rings off and see if the clicking goes away.

                      Jim,

Your a better man then I. I think I would have gone and rented a car for them before handing over the keys to the vette.

I had pulled the car out of the garage and went into the house. When I came out she was in the car on the cell phone looking in the mirror. Thought it was a great photo op. She is 14 and has dreams, repeat dreams, of driving it when she gets to be 16. We'll see...................

When the kids were younger, I used to take them across the street into a parking lot and do burn outs in my race car (9 second big block Camaro) with them on my lap (with ear protection of course). They loved it until the smoke from the burn out would engulf the interior, then they wanted out!

                        Joe,

If the weather is nice on Sunday, I'll do just that!

                        Thanks,
