Question on 69 l71 starter motor wiring

I've got an extra wire I'm not sure where it goes. It's not the size and color of anything in the AIM. It's red and small with a fiber wrapping. I also checked with the meter and the other end has been cut off and is behind the engine. The first pic is of the wire at the starter, the second is the cut wire behind the engine. Anyone know? I pretty sure I read that the transitor ignition uses a wire from the starter to the coil for a full 12 volts on starting. Is this it? My transitor ignition was disconnected but I'm putting it back together now. Thanks for any help!

I can't see from the picture exactly were you are in the engine compartment, but I can tell you that the original connections at the starter solenoid were splicen into the main engine harness as they were constructed with a special (and expensive) high temperature wire covering to withstand the heat behind the exhaust manifolds. The section of the harness after the splice, from the splice to the starter solenoid was then tapes with a special glass tape for added heat resistance. it would not be unusual for some work to have been done thru the years in that area. The 6 and 7 circuit as I rember were the ones involved, the 6 circuit (purple 12 gauge) activates the solenoid, and the 7 circuit (18 gauge yellow provides the 12v feed to the coil during starting. I'm not sure if I have a print of that harness or not, but I will look. I remember the harness build well as that technique was used on all the 396 and 427 engines in Camaro and Chevelle and Corvette, and I was the manufacturing engineer on the wiring manufacturing line for all Chevrolet products except Corvette that year. All I can tell you from looking at the taping is that "Bubba was there" and you probably out to look at untaping the harness at that end and at least see what was done, if not just replacing the harness.
