My 61 has a wire running from the driver side intake manifold
it runs from the sensor over the manifold to the other side
and runs along the top of the valve cover were it meets up
with other wires and goes thru the firewall
.This wire is very heavy like it is covered with cloth?
It is in poor shape and I would like to relace.Is this difficult
and can a guy with a check book in his tool box do it? Thanks Ron

Ron -

That's the temp sender wire, and it's covered/protected from engine heat/abrasion by an impregnated woven fabric loom; there's nothing special about the wire itself. Lectric Limited (www.lectriclimited.com) sells a repair kit consisting of a new wire with the connector on it and the woven loom, and other vendors sell it too. Place the splice inside the loom and nobody will see it.

It is an easy repair. I spliced the connection in the wire harness at the fire wall. I used heat shrink tubing to protect the splice and then re-wrapped the wire harness the with the original tape. If you are having the car judged you may want to confirm that the sending unit clip in th kit will pass judging.

the fabric loom for the temp sending unit wire was available from ac delco in the 80's(may still be so). got a 25' long piece in the box from ac back then and have used about half of the 25' since. only problem is the od of the loom is about 20% larger than original loom . haven't evaluated lectric limited's loom. my 2 cents. mike
