1968 sb with a/c (beating a dead horse)

Hey guys,
I know the 68's are not the most desirable cars and some of you have no interest but, the parts seem to be made out of gold. I just don't want to see someone spend alot of money on some parts that have the POSSIBILITY of being incorrect if there is still some DOUBT that not ALL of the sb a/c cars came with the carb solenoid set-up.

Here is another 1968 small block with a/c. It's another ebay ad and it appears to be a 300hp late build car (23xxx). It does have a plastic fan shroud. Which seems to follow a pattern of later build a/c cars with the plastic fan shroud and earlier a/c cars with the metal fan shroud. I see no signs of a carb idle solenoid set-up. This is just one more pic added to my collection. ALL without any signs of the solenoid set-up.

Or maybe all the carb solenoid set-ups went into the trash along with the smog equipment. As these ads continue to pop up I'll continue to save them hoping one day to actually see a small block idle solenoid carb set-up.

Bryan, I have a tendency to believe that most were discarded as being part of the smog system. Us older pharts remember how despised any part of that system was. I wish that I had photographed the ones that I have seen.

Oh, they were there... I 'bugged' Dick for hours at the Park City National Convention because he was going to judge a '68 with A/C and I too wanted to see what the original idle solenoid setup looked like (more than the shots in MF Dobbins' Fact Book) and that required the owner to remove the air cleaner.

In good time, Father Richard got around to judging the car and the air cleaner came off. What in the (*&^ is that? Owner confessed his QJet had a 'squirrely' bracket in a box when he got the car, but no solenoid and he'd installed a generic aftermarket solenoid. I went away somewhat disappointed...I'd seen 'half' of what I wanted to see.

Well, last week I was strolling through a scrap yard and finally saw the other 'half' of the setup. There was a '68 El Camino in relatively 'fresh' condition (air cleaner hadn't yet been removed) and it was AC equipped. I pulled the air cleaner and had my first sighting of a that elusive Delco Remy 1114418, factory only, idle solenoid.

It looks identical to the '69 DR 1114421 with the only difference being the embossed PN that's stamped on the side of the outer case. So, they did exist and I actually saw one of the elusive critters!

...a few other points...

...seeing as all the L79 cars were four speeds and the manual shift cars "usually" had a slightly higher rpm idle speed setting, I'm not sure I buy the fact that the A/C L-79 350hp 4spd cars had this part. I can understand the 300hp cars with A/C AND an automatic having this as when the A/C would be turned on AND you would put it in drive it would drop the rpm's considerably...

...and I'll bet you took that solenoid and bracket off that car, didn't you?

Jack that supports my theory that the brackets were on other GM car lines also.

Did you mean to say solenoid or bracket on other car lines?

I interpreted Jacks comments to be limited to the solenoid on the ElCamino and that the bracket was different.

Maybe I need some of your moonshine..

Yes, but Jack refuses to post pictures that aren't hosted on this server. It makes the link "useless" in a year when you delete the picture, so he doesn't do it. He wishes his pictures to be saved forever on the thread.

I tend to agree with you about the L-79 with a/c.
And another thing, all the literature seems to refer to big block cars with the set-up.

A point just brought to my attention was the fact that it might actually be an anti-dieseling solenoid. Thank about that y'all
