Need help with a 69 starter wire

I posted a couple days ago on this so there should be a couple more pics there. I have a small red wire covered in cloth that comes out of the wiring harness at the starter. I traced the wire with a meter and it is cut off right under the washer pump. Does anyone know what this is for the aim doesn't show a cloth covered small wire. I'm thinking it goes to the plus side of the coil for a full 12 volts on starting but I'm not sure. Any help would be great!

Here is a pic of where it is cut off

The end of the red pen is touching the end of the cloth covered wire that I'm trying to figure out. Thanks for any help.

Re: Need help with a 69 starter wire

      George,

I recently completed an engine overhaul on my 71 LS5 and had the same red wire with the cloth cover in the harness going to the starter. The starter end went to the "R" or inboard terminal of the solenoid and the other end went to the + side of the coil.

You are correct in that it is there to provide 12 volts to the coil during cranking only. After the starter shuts offf, the voltage is supplied to the coil thru a resistive type of wire that limits the voltage to the coil to about 9 volts or so.

Both the chassis service manual and AIM (for 71) show this wire as being yellow, but mine is definitly red not yellow.

I have some pictures if your interested.

At least according to the factory wiring prints, Yellow was the only color used for the 7A circuit from the solenoid to the coil. I can't explain your red ones...at least during the time I spent with that part of the business, yellow was it.

            Bill, George,

Here are some pictures of my wires. The first one shows the cloth covering but you can see the wire is red under it. The nes picture is where it connects to the coil. Also red............

Yes, the braid is the fiberglass braided over the silicone cable for bigblock heat protection. I don't have abigblock print so it is quite possible the natural silicone compound we used in ignition which was a rusty red could have been used and any coloring would have been in the braid. As I said in an earlier post, Corvette was the only harness I did not do the manufacturing planning for, as it was done on a single station in another location, but the engineering design of the harness for bigblocks with the glass braid over silicone used on the solenoid to keyswitch and the bypass to the coil both was consistant on all the chevrolet 396-427 lines.

My '69 has 2 braided wires that run together under the ignition shilding and go to the coil. The wires are crimped by the same spade lug. On one of the wires I can see some red, don't see any color on the other wire. This is a 350 engine.
