    70 Z-28

Know it's not about Corvettes, but could use some expert advise. Is it possible due to the Norwood strike (or any other reason), that VIN numbers could have been built out of sequence?

Bought a numbers matching 70 Z28. Cowl tag says June build. Engine, transmission, rear-end, support June, but according to a survey of VINs and build dates, this car should have been built in February.

Is there an explanation, or do I need to contact my attorney?

    TIA

No, you do not need to contact your attorney since you did look at this car before your purchase and you DO bear some responsibility for your purchase either good or bad.

1970 Camaro production at Norwood did not start until late January/early February in calender year 1970. 1969 model Camaro's were made at Norwood until December 1969. What "survey" of build dates and VINS did you look at for your information?

      Re: 70 Z-28

Are you allowing for the late start of the '70 model year? the '69 model ran for more than 12 months due to the strike and late intro of the new body style. Without knowing the actual numbers you are dealing with that is one thing unique about the '70 Camaro builds.

Have not seen car yet, Relied on seller pics. Friend won triple damages from same situation. It's called fraud.

"Friend won triple damages from same situation. It's called fraud".

Was your friend also to "busy/lazy" to look at the car in person and rely only on pictures?

I'm picking on you because the information you desire is information YOU should have researched BEFORE you committed and/or spent YOUR money on an expensive collector car. Buyer's remorse in today's world must be spelled attorney!

Did not find the web-site until yesterday. Was looking for some constructive help. Hope you feel much better about yourself by putting me down. Glad the rest of the NCRS members I've met aren't as rude as yourself.

                Tim:

I've never, ever, heard of VIN numbers not following sequentially over time, and the "birthday" calculators based on end of month or end of week VIN records are usually pretty good for estimating when a particular car was produced, give or take a FEW days.

An example of what you're hoping for is my '69 Corvette. The engine, transmission, and many other components were produced in March '69, and the car would have been produced in April, without the '69 strike. However, the VIN and trim tag date show that the car wasn't produced until the end of June '69.

In my case, however, the VIN is later than "expected", and all documentation supports this (dealer check-off included). It sounds like you may have a "built" Z28, where everything matches but the VIN...perhaps a rustbucket Z28 cloned into a good earlier Camaro body.

You may have legal recourse, I am not an attorney and don't have a clue if you do.

Best of luck as you try to sort it out.

                Steve

I may be rude however I am 1 of only 2 who at least offered some help!

The following information is from www.nastyz28.com and my be of interest/help to you.

1970 Camaro Spotters Guide & New Features
1970 saw the introduction of the all new Second Generation Camaro. The 1st generation Camaro (1967 - 1969) was seen as a hasty response to the Ford Mustang. It was considered a compromise by some critics. There would be no compromises with this car. Due to production delays the 1970 Camaro was introduced in February 1970, half way into the production year. Because of this, some people will call the 1970 Camaro a 1970 1/2, but officially the car is a 1970 model year Camaro. Good things come to those who wait, and this car was met with rave reviews from nearly everyone. Chevrolet had a winner that would run for 12 years.

The 1970 Camaro was all new. It was longer (2.0"), lower (1.1") and wider (0.4") than the previous Camaro but still had a 108" wheelbase. It had a wider track (1.7" front, 0.5" rear). It's doors were longer (by 8") and the roof was moved back giving the car a sleek long hood, short rear deck which typifyed the pony-car. The convertible body style was no longer available. The windshield was swept back increasing visibility by 10% along with hiding the radio antenna within it (depending on radio choice). The rear view mirror was bonded to the windshield, no longer hung off the roof trim. The front subframe was redesigned to improve the structural integrity of the car. Efforts were made to eliminate road noise by strategically insulating various points on the car. The interior of the car was completely redesigned with a new dashboard, console & other interior trim.

The Camaro was also available with a distinctive appearance package called the Rally Sport (RPO Z22) option. Unlike the previous years hidden headlights, the RS package included a distinctive nose & bumper treatment, round front parking lights, hidden wipers and other trim. The Rally Sport package could be added to any model Camaro and when combined with the SS option became a RS/SS or when combined with the Z28 it became a RS/Z28.
Further details on the Rally Sport can be found here.

The "Super Sport" (RPO Z27) package was continued. This model offered stylish performance, and was the only way to obtain the 396 Big Block Chevy engine (actually displaced 402 cubic inches).
Complete information on the Super Sport can be found here.

The "Z28 Special Performance Package" (RPO Z28) was not only positioned as the top Camaro performer, but it put its money where its mouth was. Designed to race in the SCCA Trans Am Series, the 1970 rules changes allowing for the 5.7L engine meant the Camaro was able to now use the 350 engine. The previous Z28's were limited to 302 cubic inches and were known to be tempermental on the street. The bigger engine also allowed an automatic transmission to be used in the Z28 for the 1st time. Due to the solid lifter, high revving cam, Air Conditioning was still not available on the Z28. With a stout drivetrain, including a mandatory 12 bolt rear axle, and a tuned suspension, the Z28 was a match for anything found on the street, or at the track.
Complete information on the 1970 Z28 can be found here.

While 1970 is the 1st year of the Second Generation Camaro, it is also seen as the last of the high compression, solid-lifter cam, low geared ground pounding muscle cars. While the 1970 Camaro was being introduced, the muscle car market was disappearing, or at least changing. Among the other changes, highlights & distinguishing features for 1970 were....

Thanks for your reply. To do what your saying, the block and transmission would have to be restamped, correct? Doesn't appear to have been. No grinding/flat areas.

                      not restamped

They may have started with an original June Z28 trim tag and drivetrain from a rusty car or junkyard (or perhaps a stolen car) and pieced it together with a donor body or VIN tag from the early car.

To help rule out a stolen car, take the VIN number from the engine and trans and call your local police and have them run it. If you're lucky, it will come up clean. Then you likely have a car pieced together from 2 others. What's better? To leave it as is, or to go to your state and try to get a "state issued" VIN tag replacement. The replacement VIN tag would be OBVIOUSLY not original, but at least you wouldn't have to keep explaining why the VIN and drivetrain don't match up!

                        Re: not restamped

But the engine and transmission have the February VIN that matches the VIN on the windshield. If it was a June drivetrain it would have a different non-matching VIN, Right?

                          Re: 70 Z-28

I'm not suggesting any restamping occurred, rather I am trying to explain how a car could have been created (in the marketplace, not by GM), with an engine/drivetrain from June 1970 and a VIN from February 1970.

My understanding is that you did some research and some due diligence before you purchased the car, and that you are trying to explain the date discrepancy between the drivetrain (which seems like correct, matching dates and codes) and the body (which seems like a correct 1970 Camaro VIN).

Please let me know if I have misunderstood.

                            Tim,

I'm trying to help to the best of my limited ability, but you are putting out conflicting info:

Bought a numbers matching 70 Z28. Cowl tag says June build. Engine, transmission, rear-end, support June, but according to a survey of VINs and build dates, this car should have been built in February.

But the engine and transmission have the February VIN that matches the VIN on the windshield. If it was a June drivetrain

The engine (and transmission) can't easily support both June and February build dates.

I think that maybe you have a "bad" trim tag, or perhaps you are deciphering the date code from the trim tag incorrectly, due to the weird production year? Should be a letter and 2 numbers.

                            Maybe everything is cool!

                            Steve

I've been trying to follow this thread but I have to admit to being a little confused. It would be much more helpful if you supplied the numbers we are comparing, what is the vin on the windshield? What is the engine stamp number set including the engine VIN? What is the body build date code on the trim tag? Is it a Norwood or Van Nuys car on the trim tag? Correct rivets in all locations?
