    64 Transmission/shifter 4-speed

Muncie, 4-speed. Will be trying to adjust shifter again. Cannot seem to get it right! After adjustment, it slips into a binding mode? Will not go forward or backward? Have had the tranny rebuilt, new linkage, does it take many washers on linkage levers attached to the tranny, to avoid any loose play? Any tips on adjustment would be greatly appreciated.

    Re: 64 Transmission/shifter 4-speed

Has the shifter itself been rebuilt? The slippage you mention is generally a result of misadjustment of the neutral gate, wear on the bottom of the shift lever, and /or excess movement of the shift arms in the shifter "box" the factory used spring clips at various points on the linkage rods to reduce vibration/movement, look at the assy drawing for locations. The box that the shifter arms is contained in is a stamped metal part thet is secured by a welded tab on one end. I have seen that weld break whcih will also cause excess slop.
