rhrhrhrhrhrh Sound Coming from the Rear

Yesterday, I started to hear a soft/loose grinding sound like RRHRRHRRHRRH. It was coming from the right rear side of the car and predominantly on acceleration (soft and hard). Yesterday the sound came only in fourth gear, and this morning any gear and light acceleration creates the cyclic sound. Could these be my u-joints going south and can I replace these myself without a press? Where can I get good u-joints. I recall posts that are now in the unaccessible archives. I think I would like to go with the sealed (as original) Spicer u-joints but don't know the fastest way to get them or who carries them locally. I will start on that once I post this email. Perhaps someone can help me confirm that u-joints is my problem to begin with.

    Thanks.
    Tony

I had a sound like that coming from the rear of my 67 but it was more constant. The problem was the rear-bearings were completely shot.

      Hi Tony:

The noise you describe is usually not associated with U Joint failure / deterioration and Nick is probably correct. The noise will change characteristics as the bearing and spindle assembly heats with friction. If this is a situation you are not familiar with get it looked at SOON and don't drive it the meantime.
