    '65 - Shift into Reverse - Noise

    Hello,

when I want to shift into reverse gear (M20 gear box, new clutch) after driving a while I get a greeting from the gear box (translated from German :-) ), i.e. a loud sound is audible until the gear is completely engaged. It's better when I shift very cautios/slow or first into 1.st gear. Is this normal/tolerabel?

    Regards
    Oliver

    Oliver------

Very, very normal. Reverse is a non-synchronized gear. Shifting into first gear before shifting into reverse is a technique that myself and many others have been using for years to minimize the phenomenon you described (and, help reduce wear on the reverse gear teeth).

Generally a sign the clutch has not fully released, too much free travel the ususal culprit, move the point og clutch engagement farthur up in the pedal travel and it should clear up.

My tractor does this. No joke! For me there were two solutions. 1) Making sure it had the heavy grease in the transmission as it was intended and filled to proper level. 2) Adjust the clutch so it is not slightly dragging when dis-engaged. Putting the transmission in 1st gear temporarily stops the counter shaft gear sitting in the bottom of the transmission. Then pulling it out and quickly putting it in reverse doesn't allow it to start spinning before engaging the reverse teeth. I think a little grind can be seen as normal but it shouldn't be very cranky going into reverse. Just my opinion. Make sure it is adjusted properly. Terry

          Oliver,
Shifting from second gear before shifting into reverse even works better. Try it, there will be no grind.
