    67 Brake Master Cyl.

Six years ago, when we started the restoration, the car had silicone brake fluid in it. Now, as we are putting the system back together, I am wondering if we need to do anything to the master cylinder if we are going to use regular brake fluid. The lines and hoses were all replaced with new ones but the calipers were not. Thanks for the help.

    Hi Rick:

If you don't mind a question to a question, why would you wish to return to Glycol fluid when you were using Silicone and you have replaced most components ? I am a proponent of Silicone and am simply curious, Thank You.

Jerry, I hadn't really thought about it. The car had silicone in it when I bought it and the car had not been run for a few years. I didn't drive it at all and we started to take it apart when I bought it. I just figured I'd use regular fluid for ease of use. What say you? Thanks.

Rick, remember you have seals, piston type assy parts in that boosters mechancical end that has to work back and forth. Hope they are considered not dried up or sticking. Just some food for thought. Hope all goes well. GRR#33570

          Hi Rick:

Given the car was already running Silicone, most of the difficult "conversion " work has already been done. Many who would appreciate the benefits of Silicone are reluctant to undertake the work involved, (the jury is still out on what is really necessary to accomplish this conversion), to use the DOT 5. Personally I would jump at the opportunity to use the Silicone if in your position.

            Rick-----

I don't recommend returning to glycol-based fluid, but if you wish to do it, I would stronly recommend disassembling your calipers and master cylinder, thoroughly cleaning them of all of the silicone fluid, and reassembling with all new seals prior to changing the fluid type.

Thanks for the advice. Would I need to do anything more if I stay with the silicone fluid? Thanks again.

                Hi Rick:

Given the cost of a master cylinder rebuild versus your total investment , I think I would rebuild it, (it shouldn't be necessary but it sure won't hurt category), I would, however, give the calipers a run the way they are, cautiously at first, if they leak it will be Silicone and will not damage any of your restored finishes. They are simple enough to remove and rebuild if there is a leak.
