    C2 Z06/HD K/H master cyl rebuild kit?

Any fellow Z06 enthusiast on this forum willing to help with a source for a C2 Z06 HD Kelsey Hayes master cylinder rebuild kit? In particular, seal #9 and wave washer #11 (as in '64 CSM supplement). Also, interested in talking with anyone who has one of these original dual circuit master cylinders - and discussing/comparing "pat applied for" location, etc. Thanks in advance for any help.

    fav,
I ordered a kit in '79 for the one I had. The local auto parts store had to special order it then from EIS. It was complete and worked fine when the car was done. I don't recall any "patent pending" casting viewed from the top, and the only thing I can recall cast in the bottom was "Kelsey-Hayes".

I would suggest that you contact everyone you can find in Hemmings who advertises brake kits. You're better off asking for a number rather than a kit for a Z-06. Unfortunately, I do not have the original EIS number (or the Chevy kit #). Call the oldest auto parts stores in the book and ask if they have an old EIS brake parts catalog.

    Good Luck

        fav and Verne-----

The GM kit for this master cylinder was GM #3850280. It was discontinued without supercession in March, 1968. I'd be amazed if any of the brake parts manufacturers still had a kit available for this master cylinder. The only possible way would be if the same, basic master cylinder were used for some other applications and, thus, enough of a market was created to justify the continued manufacture and stocking of parts therefore. No other GM application used this master cylinder. However, some other cars might have used a similar master cylinder. I think that some Ford Mustangs, and perhaps other models, used a Kelsey-Hayes master cylinder.

Kelsey-Hayes has been out of the master cylinder manufacturing business for many years, so I would not expect any help from them.

Anyway, you could use the above-referenced part number to cross-reference to other barke parts suppliers like Wagner, Bendix, Raybestos, or EIS.

That could be. Unfortunately, I don't know the bore size of this master cylinder, but I'm sure that others will. My very vague recollection is that these master cylinders might have been an "oddball" bore size (like, maybe 15/16"). However, I'm not sure about that, at all.

One problem, though, is that I would expect that the primary and secondary piston in a lot of these master cylinders might be in need of replacement. It's hard to believe that they would not suffer some corrosion or wear damage after all these years. If the master cylinder is to work properly, the pistons (and, the bore) have to be perfect.

              Addendum/Correction

I did find another Chevrolet application for the Z-06 master cylinder. It was used on some 1963-64 Chevrolet passenger cars with dual master cylinders. This included some taxis, police and, possibly, others. However, I don't think that many were made and, likely, very few survive today. So, even though there was another application, it doesn't change the "equation" very much for brake parts manufacturers unless there were also relatively large scale use in the vehicles of other auto manufacturers.

I offer this information only to correct my statement that the master cylinder was not used in other Chevrolet applications. As I say, it doesn't change things very much.

Have you checked some of the brake rebuilders? They rebuild mine some time ago I think around 2000 Cant hurt to check with them or some others. Phil 8063

                  Re: Addendum/Correction

                  Joe,
I can't find any Passenger car application for that Z-06 master cylinder. All my literature lists the '63 RPO J-65 metallic linings as using the same 7/8th master cylinder as the Corvette with J-65 (p/n 5462385). The heavy duty chassis equipment RPO Z-04 which was used on police and taxi also used the same 5462385 master cylinder. Even the '63 RPO Z-11 factory race cars which also used the same vented brake backing plates as the Z-06 used the 5462385 master cylinder.
I can find no reference that the Z-06 master cylinder (p/n 3828760) had any other application. And I can find no reference to any dual stage master cylinder option for Passenger cars.
To adapt the Z-06 master cylinder to a Passenger car would require different brake lines and junction blocks but I can't find any unique part numbers for these items. .....(??)
