Re: Why would oil pressure get higher?
Geoffrey-----
I would expect a "hot-and-running" oil pressure of about 45 PSI for your engine. If, indeed, that's what it was, but it's now as you described, then I expect that the most probable culprit would be a sticking oil pressure relief valve (in the oil pump). The valve consists of a "piston" and a spring. Sometimes the "piston" can fit too tight in the bore in the oil pump cover and consequently stick or bind.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Have you tried a direct oil pressure gauge to be sure you are getting a correct reading on your in car gauge?Tom Hendricks

Re: Why would oil pressure get higher?
Before they staryed putting a bypass in the filter we saw this problem. That was one of the problems they had. I went on a few warranty calls for Fram in early 1960's on ther first Ph-8. They added the PH-8A which had the built in bypass.. I saw some that were bulged out and blown off. Filters now have the by pass. Dale- Top

Re: Why would oil pressure get higher?
Geoff, not to hijack your post but I have a similar question. I have a a 67 327/350hp (L-79) and my guage would indicate under 30 after warm up. I replaced the copper line and now the guage pegs at 60 all the time. Does anyone have any suggestions.
Regards,
Rick
P.S. Mine also returns to zero at shut off.- Top

Re: Why would oil pressure get higher?
Geoffrey------
I'm not too big of a believer in "chemical repair agents". However, I don't think that most of them will do much harm. So, it might be worth a try.
One thought here: if the engine in this car has gone a long while between starting, it may be that all of the oil "departed" the oil pump surfaces. If only the slightest amount of corrosion formed in the oil pump pressure relieve valve piston, that would be enough to cause it too stick. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Why would oil pressure get higher?
When was your last oil change, and, er...who did it...Lube N' Go? Any chance they could have slipped some 40W oil in by mistake?
With the temperatures beginning to drop, this sounds more like high oil viscosity. I have exactly the same behavior on my 2006 in the fall/winter if I get on it before the oil temp is above about 150 deg...and it's running 5W-30. Right after start up, oil pressure is about 45 at idle, over 70 at 2500-3000rpm...consequently my driver info read-out stays set on engine oil temp now.- Top
