    help with muncie tranny

I just got my muncie tranny I bought off e-bay and I have a few questions. I was told this was a 1967 from a chevelle. The humbers are as follows: cover 3883685, Main case 3885010, stamped on left side near cover is 72136837. The tail is 3846429. Can anyone ID this gear box?

Problem #1: The shifter mounting area has 5 holes. 3 on top 2 underneath. Two on top closest to the main case are tapped 3/8-16 one on top 5/16-18. Two on botton 5/16-18. The hole on the bottom row closest to the main case has half of the outside wall of the tapped hole broken away. It fell off in my hand when I was inspecting the tranny. Don't want to talk about whether or not the ebayer new it was cracked! Will I have to repair with heliarc welding and redrilling and tapping in order to mount the hurst shifter I intend to purchase or does the shifter mount to the rear most 3 mounting holes?

Problem #2: the input shaft has some up and down movement. Should I replace the front bearing or is some movement to be expected?

    Thanks
    Don

      Don,

I cant speak to the shaft play issue, but I can tell you the 3885010 main body and the 3884685 cover are correct for "67" . The tail shaft is incorrect as I have it listed for a "64" . The correct tail shaft for a "67" is listed as 3857584.

By replacing this I think you will solve most of the other problems as well !

        Re: additional info

Probably a pontiac trans, as they used the earlier tailhousing with the speedo drive coming out the drivers side rather than the passenger side as in '67. Some "slop" in the front shaft is usual, but while it's on the bench, a rebuild kit is not that expensive (about $125-150) and would greatly inprove peace of mind. If you are going low budget and don't want to change the tailhousing, the good news is that the hurst for a Corvette mounts on the rear holes.

Bill, thanks for your post. I guess I should have stated that this was for my 56 B/A. At any rate I gave the trans to my local speed shop tonight to check it out, reweld the broken bolt hole in the tail, re-tap the wrong hole sizes and order a Hurst shifter for my car. I could have re-tapped the holes and ordered the shifter myself although not done the aluminum welding, but the guy is building my motor and has been a great help and source of info. I figure it doesn't hurt to let him make a couple extra dollars. It's not alway about money.

When I get it back Monday It will be ready to install.

Re: Some shaft movement is ok

The shaft will move slightly up and down even on newly re-built trannys. Excessive up and down is not good though.
