    Removing/Regluing Wood Grain Trim

The deluxe door panels I received from Al Knoch had the wrong wood grain on them for my '74. They quickly sent me the correct walnut grain inserts when I told them about the problem, but I was wondering what the best way was to remove the incorrect inserts. Also, what is the best way to glue the new inserts in? They appear to have some kind of press adhesive on the back, but one of the incorrect inserts was already coming a little loose, so I want to use something that will really hold. I will be gluing down the console wood grain trim at the same time. Thanks! Jeff

    Hi Jeff You Handsome Devil:

Most of these panels are secured with Contact cement, (unless they have changed recently), Mineral Spirits will loosen the cement . In the case of the already loose panel you can trickle some under it being careful not to allow it to sit on the vinyl, ( it should not harm the vinyl, never has for me, but use simple caution), getting under the well adhered panel can be difficult, you can often work on a corner successfully. The longer it sits on the glue the softer it becomes, be patient.

To apply the new inserts purchase some 3M "900" contact cement, it is an aerosol that is by far the best contact cement available, spray it on the door and the back of the new wood insert, let dry till almost completely dry to the touch then press in place being careful about the alignment, you won't move it once it has made contact. Best of Luck.

      A warning

      Hi Jeff:

As a word of afterthought. Many folks use Lacquer thinner to dissolve contact cement and it will soften it quicker than Mineral Spirits, ( but it will turn to Gum as the thinner evaporates ), don't use it. Lacquer thinner will ruin the vinyl upholstery when it comes in contact in short order.
