    '63 PB booster rebuilding

I've got a previously "rebuilt" power brake booster on a '63 Corvette I just bought. The booster can shape looks stock to me, but it's painted black. This damn thing locks up the wheels if I'm not super gentle when applying the pedal to stop.

I'd like to send this booster somewhere for proper repair. I've haven't had a booster rebuilt in the last 15 years. Can others please recommend someone they've used recently?

Jerry, I've used Steve Gregori in Sanger, CA on several occasions. His work is very nice. Don't have a number handy but he advertises in Driveline.

BTW, went through Mobile for the first time a couple of months ago. Nice town.

With the mechanical skills I have heard others express about your craft, I have little doubt that you could not tackle this simple job yourself. There really is not alot to go bad or wrong inside those two halves. There is not a person making any of the internal parts for 1963 PB today. They just clean up the rubber, replate some of the metal parts and reassemble them. Parts can be located if a replacement is needed. As you probably know, the same power head was used on 1962-1963 full size Chevy, with different firewall mount brackets, different pedal push rods and a few minor other details. The guts are almost identical.

        www.brakeboosters.com or www.detailplating.com.

Steve also does several different types of zinc plating and also does the grey phosphate coatings. He did the backing plates and hood latches on my car and lots of Camaro stuff a few years back.

His turnaround time was also pretty quick.

Booster Dewey who ads in Hemmings. or you could find a 63 buick Riviera(the booster of which is identical to the 63 vette ((unique to midyear boosters)) booster) diaphram and rebuild it yourself. one who can master Rochesters can handle a PB booster. good luck and thanks for the help in the recent past. mike

Jerry, as unique as 63 is, the booster is also unique. The shaft between the booster and the MC is adjustable. This may not be the problem but give it a try. 1/4 turn of the adjustment shaft moves the brake pedal by 1 inch. I probably explained that wrong, but you'll figure it out.

              Thank you all.

I'll give Steve in Sanger, CA, a call. His website says '64 and up, but he may have some '63 Corvette booster parts too.

I especially appreciate the technical tips offered. I'll read up on the '63 brake booster design. I had assumed that the previous rebuilder installed some incorrect internal part to make it lock up the brakes so easily. I could be wrong, however. Maybe it could be fixed by an adjustment I could make.

Jerry, Andy Cannizzo rebuilds the boosters also. I saw one of his on a show car at Marlborough and it looked quite nice. Owner said the brakes were fine.
andy3651@aol.com As you know AC specilizes in 63 stuff. John
