I need more help. I have a 1968 427/390 L36 repo 66. In trying to mount a new fan shroud to the radiator and radiator support I found that the shroud would not fit. I think the possible problem is that the radiator I have is incorrect. I measured the core and it measures 23 X 16. Information I have been able to get is it should be 22 1/2 by 17 X 2 3/4 the part numbers and type of radiator are what is confusing. The assmby book reflects a part number 3008567. Another book I have and the Chvy parts department shows the number to be 3008566. In reviewing the NCRS pocket spec. guide book page 62 it reflects that a 3008566 is an aluminum type and fits a 1968 w/tubro Hydra-matic and a 3008567 is an aluminum type that fits a 1968 350 engine w/air cond. & manual trans. The book shows a part number 3155316 auuminum type for a 1968-72 Base & L46 engine w/manual trans. Doc Rebuild shows in his catalog page 27 "66-68 427 or 68 327 with AC and/or Auto ... Authentic Copper Radiator with Manual" his part number 1219546. He also shows Aluminum radiators page 29 "66-68 427 Manual Trans except L-88 with OE 3008567 radiator and 66-68 427 Auto Trans using 3008566 OE. So my questions are (1) is the correct radiator an Aluminum or a Copper-Brass? and (2) which part number is correct.

Re: C3 1968 Radiator
Jay------
The correct radiator for a 1968 Corvette with L-36 is a COPPER/BRASS radiator of EITHER GM #3008566 or GM #3008567. Both of these raditors are identical except that the 3008566 has an integral oil cooler and fittings therefore (on the rear of the right side tank) and this radiator was used for THM-400 applications. The 3008567 was used for manual trans applications and has no oil cooler. The 3008566 later became the SERVICE radiator for all 1968 applications using either radiator. For manual trans applications, the oil cooler is unused. Both radiators are of identical size and can be interchanged (although, obviously, the non-oil cooler 3008567 cannot be used for THM-400 applications).
Both radiators are long-since discontinued. The 3008567 was discontinued "when the earth was young".In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: C3 1968 Radiator
Joe: Does that mean the 53-72 Corvette Pocket Spec Guide that was Published by the NCRS is incorrect? Like I said it shows Aluminum for All 68's. It only shows Aluminum for both the 566 and 567. The guide also says that the 63-72 aluminum radiators contain a Harrison identification tag, but the part number and date code of manufacture are stamped directly into the top left of the radiator. Is this correct? If so is it stamped on the core or on the tank? Was the Copper/Brass radiators so stamped?- Top

Re: C3 1968 Radiator
Jay,
Look at the date your copy of the Spec guide was printed -- on Page 1. My bet is you have the First edition, First printing, Summer 1991 which covers 1953-1972. In the First edition, Second printing, Fall 1991, page 62 was corrected. If my memory is correct a notice for this and some other changes was printed in The Restorer at the time. There have been other changes and additions since then. I think the most recent version is the Fourth edition, Spring 2004, but it would be best to check with the folks in Cincinnati to be sure. It might be worth while to invest in the newer version which is a two volume set due to increased information. 1953-1967 is now one volume and 1968-1982 is the other.Terry- Top

Re: C3 1968 Radiator
After seeing the posts from John and Dick, I know why I kept my old editions of The Spec Guide. The first and second printing that I referenced DO have radiator information in them -- on Page 62 as Jay mentioned. I don't have any other editions handy until the current 2004 editions -- which have no radiator information in them.

Re: C3 1968 Radiator
To All that responded:
You are all right. I do have the first edition - first printing - Summer, 1991. It is the one that I found that had any reference to radiators as Terry said. While we are talking about my radiator problem. Does any one know what the part number for the radiator support is? The assembly manual says 3930100 for the L36. The one I have (which must be incorrect) has written with yellow crayon 3938090. Does anyone know what a 3938090 goes to? It fits my (not correct radiator, core 23 X 16) but won't let me mount the fan shroud. If I get the correct radiator (which should be a 22.5 X 17) to fit the shroud then I don't beleive it (the radiator will fit the Support). The bottom and top brackets will be wider than radiator. I know I can move (by welding) the bottom brackets but what about the top? This is getting way to krazy for me. I wish there was a better network here in Utah.- Top

Re: C3 1968 Radiator
Jay-----
Yes, I agree with John; there is no radiator information that I know of in the pocket spec guides. Perhaps, there are some editions of it out that that do have such information, but I certainly don't have one nor have I seen one. The information in the current edition of the 68-69 NCRS Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide is correct for 1968 Corvette radiators.
The part number for 63-72 Corvette aluminum radiators is stamped directly into the top plate of the radiator. Original Corvette aluminum radiators do not have integral tanks. The date code is sually stamped directly into the top of such radiators but is sometimes stamped on a small aluminum palte which is welded to the top of the radiator.
Copper/brass radiators usually have a tag soldered onto the right side tank with application information. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: C3 1968 Radiator
Jay-----
GM #3930100 was the radiator support used in PRODUCTION for L-36, L-68, L-71, L-79 with C-60, and most base engine with M-40 and/or C-60. This support is designed for use with the copper brass radiator and uses the "stirrup" type mounts top and bottom. The bottom "stirrups" are welded to the radiator support; the top "stirrups" are bolted. This fan shroud was never available in SERVICE.
GM #3938100 was the fan shroud used for base engine with manual trans and without C-60 as well as L-79 without C-60. This support uses a "cup type" radiator mounting system on the bottom and a single bolted on bracket at the top. It is designed for use with the GM #3155316 aluminum radiator and the mounts that I described work with that unit. It, too, was never available in SERVICE.
For most 1968 SERVICE, GM offered radiator support GM #3938995. This support had a "dual mounting system" and could accomodate either the copper brass radiator or the 3155316 aluminum radiator. At the bottom there were both a welded-on pair of "stirrups" (for the copper brass radiator) and a pair of "cup type" mounts inboard of the "stirrups" (for the 3155316 aluminum radiator). On the top, there were holes at either end (for the bolted-on upper "stirrups" for the copper brass radiator) and holes in the center for the center bracket (for the single point upper mount used by the 3155316 aluminum radiator).
There was one other radiator support used in PRODUCTION and available in SERVICE. This support was the GM #3938090. It was used only for the L-88 and was designed to accomodate the GM #3007436 aluminum radiator. This support was very similar to the 3938100 small block support described above. It has the "cup type" mount at the bottom since the GM #3007436 aluminum radiator mounts the same as the 3155316 small block aluminum radiator. It also has the single, upper center bolt holes/weld nuts for the single point, upper center mount and the holes for the bolted-on "stirrup-type" mounts (unused for the L-88 application but part of the standard corre support frame and, thus, present). Some examples of the 3938090 MAY also have the "stirrups" welded on the bottom; most do not, though. I don't know why any had them since they were superfluous for the L-88 applications. Since the L-88 used no fan shroud, there are NO provisions on the GM #3938090 radiator support for a fan shroud mounting. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
