    Dipstick tube broken

    Hello,

today I wanted to check the oil level of my '65 Corvette. Suddenly I realized that the dipstick tube was loose. I checked it and realized that it was broken. The part itself is cheap. Is the tube only plugged in the block or are there any pitfalls while removing the remaining part and installing a new tube?
I taped the hole until replacing the tube - no driving meanwhile; but the weather isn't inviting, too.

    Regards
    Oliver

Yes, it just presses about 1 inch into the hole in the block

I've used a slide hammer to remove a flush-broken end.

If you don't have a slide hammer you might try using a common thread tap to remove the remnant inside the block. The tapered shaft will grab into the sides of the old tube. Thread it in just until snug then gently wiggle everything out. But be gentle, the last thing you want is for the brittle tap to break off inside of the tube.

To insert the new tube use a wrench of a size just wide enough to clear the tube diameter but small enough to get hung up on the swaged section bulge. Gently tap on the wrench near the buldge to drive it in. You will only get one shot as the tube cannot be reused so be sure that you have the bend oriented in the right position.
