The other day I noticed the passenger side exhaust manifold on my '61 had a good size crack right down the center. I'm not sure how big of a problem this is and also how I should go about fixing it. Is there any way of patching a cracked exhaust manifold, or should I look into replacing it? Any info would be helpful.

Re: cracked exhaust manifold
HI, i've succesfully restored ironcast exhaust manifolds by grinding the crack and than TIG weld the crack with inox 304 weld wire, it's an old welders trick please do not tell anyone else, otherwise they won't come to me in the future for a special iron cast repair, know what i'm saying
Please pre heat the manifold and let the weld cool down very slowly do not cool! sorry for my poor english

Re: cracked exhaust manifold
Cast iron exhaust manifolds 'can' be repaired by welding. Ask machine shops in your neck of the woods for who's good at this.
BUT, make sure the casting you're trying to 'save' is correct to start with + you like its physical appearance before hand. It just might be more cost effective in the long run to shop for a replacement....- Top

Re: cracked exhaust manifold
What causes exhaust manifolds to crack anyway...built-in casting stresses, thermal cycling, uhhhh, drops from high places?
I had my engine rebuild guy bead-blast my original manifolds, and as I was leaving the shop with my arms full, I dropped one of mine on the concrete floor (*&%$@#&*). I grabbed it up and frantically searched for damage, and I was rewarded by seeing what appeared to be a "crack"...I choked back the tears, and tried to forget I saw it.
I haven't put it back on the engine yet, so I don't know if it leaks or not.- Top

Re: cracked exhaust manifold Re Chuck
An other way for the manifold to crack is by the use of lock washers at the end ports of the manfold. The center bolts get locks the two ends get flat so the manfold can expand and contract. Phil 8063- Top
