Dome light won't go out on my 66

My car is being reassembled following a paint job. Doors were off, headlight buckets/motors were out, hood was off, windsheild was out, front turn signals were out, tailights and lisence plate lamp was out. Now the dome light will not go out even if you manually depress the door jam button. Headlight switch is not in the courtesy position. Could one of my wires leading to the door jam button fallen off and is now grounding to complete the circuit and lighting the dome light or should I be looking for somthing else? Any ideas will be helpful. Thanks in advance.

You are on the correct track. 12 vdc is always present at the light and the circuit is completed by providing the ground. You probably have a pinched wire someplace.... locate the door switch wires to insure they are not dangling. Pull the connector off of the headlite switch to see if the problem might be with the switch. Check the wiring as it goes along the birdcage toward the left door sill under the carpet..... you could have a short as it passes the cage above the driver (assume this is a coupe)

You're right this is a coupe. The sill plates were also off. But that area wouldn't affect this would it? Thanks for the other tips as well. By disconnecting the light switch I would be testing that for the source of the problem. If the light goes out I would suspect the switch? If the light stays on the switch would not be suspect? Right?

You are correct concerning the light switch.
If the sill plates are touching the cage or some path to ground, they could be the problem. You could also have a problem at the dash courtesy lights as the lights are mounted in a metal holder and the ground wire could be touching there also.... I can't remember if the dome light is screwed to the cage or not... this could also be a source of ground.

If the doors were removed, how did those who executed the job re-set the door jamb switches? These were 'one shot', self-adjusting switches that 'learned' the geometry of the door they mated to when original installed and the factory original door was slammed shut...

There are threads in archives on how to pull the switch and re-set it to its supplier original, un-adjusted position.

            Jack,
That must be exactly what happened. The door gaps were corrected in the body work phase. Then the doors were removed from the car. Car was painted. Doors were painted off the car. New weather stripping and window seals and felts installed. Doors put back on and that is exactly when the dome light stayed on. Man you are the best!!! Thanks so much. I will be in the archives looking for the information about how to reset these. Thanks Again.

In your original thread you said you pressed the doorjam switches manually....If thats the case then you may still have a problem...UNLESS you pressed them one at a time!!!

Is your car on jack stands?

I had the same problem when I was working on the car and it was on jack stands. I think just enough flex that the door right switch was not making contact.

The car was on jackstands at various times. Thanks for that tip.
