    Muncie ID tag

Can someone tell me what the "tin" ID tag with raised number code (found under one of the bolt heads that holds the side cover on) is for. I just saw a few on E-bay in the $40-$50 price range and was wondering why they may be so important to a restoration as to garner such a price. Thanks!

    Re: Muncie ID tag

It identifies the transmission by its 7-digit GM part number. By that, you can tell if it is an M-20, 21, or 22. Why does it have value? Because every one of those cars had one of those when it left St. Louis, so it is part of the restorer's desire to return the car to how it was originally configured. There are those who build cars to score points, and there are those who build cars to be as correct as possible for the sake of being as correct as possible--the latter is attracted to a tag like that.

They are available from most restoration suppliers for $30 - just specify what year and HP. Not sure why the higher price unless the repro's are not exact?
Hope somebody enlightens us a bit more!

Mike Ernst has the right answer regarding the cost and desirability. Mike's comments are to be taken in the context that the tag is not judged in the NCRS...Why bother? He explains the "why" quite well.

I might add that if you don't have one, OR...if it's not in the same position the factory put it, you should know that Bubba has fingered your transmission somewhere along the way. If it's there, in its original position, you can pretty much be assured your transmission has never been touched...a pristine virgin so to speak.

          Add-on

While NCRS doesn't judge the tag, there are other factory concours judging organizations that do crawl under the car and attempt to verify transmission specifics...

Jack, can you imagine me trying to crawl under a car, while it is on the judging field, to get the tag #. I can think of a few more of us that would have a problem doing this also.

Shoot, Dickie, I Can't Picture You...

Even getting down to all fours!!!

That other organization must have a really young, athletic judging corps, or they must do that transmission tag thing on a lift.
