82 ECM and PROM Chip -- Joe Lucia

A few weeks ago I posted a message related to an 82 Cross Fire Engine not running. Since then, I have eliminated the engine sensors as an issue and have narrowed the problem down to the ECM or the PROM Chip. I was told that Joe Lucia would have the information on part number, etc. to help me locate an ECM with the PROM included. Joe, are you able to help me out?

ECM's are routinely rebuilt (pull the original EPROM and give up your 'core' to receive a rebuilt/tested replacement)... I'm surprized Mr. Goodwrench and/or your local AC or United Delco dealer can't supply what you need!

      Jim-----

The last available GM remanufactured ECM for your application was GM #1225550. This part has been discontinued from GM. It may or may not remain available from Delco dealers under Delco #218-12250.

Regardless of the above, you can obtain a remanufactured ECM for your application from www.autoecms.com. This outfit has a huge inventory of ECM's for vehicles. They have the GM #1225550 or equivalent thereof currently available.

The E-PROM for your application was one of three, depending upon the smog certification for your particular car. These are as follows:

      California emissions, 1st design---cal #5337ARZ----GM #1225555

      California emissions, 2nd design---cal #0253BPB----GM #1226170

      Federal emissions---cal #5343ARY or #9405BMU or #0547TS----GM #1226096

Check your E-PROM for one of the cal #'s I provided and you will know which one you need.

All of the above E-PROMS are GM discontinued. However, www.autoecms.com may be able to help you with what you need. If not, call Smog Parts, Inc at 1-800-544-4357 in Visalia, CA. They will likely have in stock the E-PROMS and may even have the ECM, too.

Carquest has the ECM listed in their catalog. Just another source

I have gotten the numbers off of the ECM and the PROM. The ECM is the 1225550 as Joe Lucia stated, and the PROM is the 9504BMU. When checking prices on the ECM, however, I have found a price range between $120 at Auto Zone, and $250 from www.autoecms.com. Is there any difference that I need to be aware of that would cause this wide price range? Or is the Auto Zone part as good as the autoecms part?

                Jim------

I would say that the ECM's are probably just as good. Here's the reason for the big price spread: the Autozone ECM is probably sold with an additional core charge of about $100, or so. So, if you don't return the core, the unit will cost you about $220. I believe that the AutoECM's part is sold outright. However, they may also offer to give you a price about $100 lower with a core return. It may also be that the AutoECM part is supplied with the PROM whereas the Autozone part might not be.

The main reason that I suggested AutoECM's and Smog Parts, Inc. was that I thought that they would be better able to help out with the PROM chip part of your quest. I don't know if you'll be able to get that from a place like Autozone. If the PROM chip is hard to come by, the full line ECM specialists might be more inclined to help you out with the PROM if you also buy the ECM from them.

Quite frankly, though, I would expect that if you have an ECM problem, it's FAR more likely to be the fault of the ECM, itself, rather than the PROM. You could probably transfer your PROM to a remanufactured ECM and solve any ECM problem you have.

Thanks Joe. I will check to make sure I understand the core charge issue with each of these ECM sources and get a replacement. In talking with each of them, I have only found the PROM available at Smog Parts and they are willing to sell in separately. So, first the ECM, and then -- if necessary -- the PROM.
