I have an 88 THAT I am having flight judged in January. I do not have the G.M. protection plan I.D.card. It is required on page 50 Of the J.M. I called the dealer where the car was purchased and talked to the service administrator and the warranty clerk, hoping that they might have the card on file. They both told me that the car did not come with the card as the original owner did not purchase the plan. Can someone shed some light on this problem? I think the dealer misunderstood your question. Every car came with a warranty (Owner Protection Plan), but it was the customer's option to purchase a separate "extended warranty" - that's what the dealers sold - they'd have that on file if the original owner had purchased it.- Top

Thank's for the response. That is what I thought. How do I obtain one at this point, the dealer doesn't have it and the previous owner doesn't have it? Do I just take the deduct and forget it or what? Tom- Top

Re: G.M. protection plan Vehicle I.D. card C-4
Some clarification if I may on "warranties" v. "service contracts". The "Owner Protection Plan" was the original new car warranty (12mo./12,000Mi.) that came with every GM car. The "Extended waranty"was an extension of the basic 12/12 if the vehcle was a dealer demo or a factory car (Brass Hat) with miles on them at the time of first retail sale. Here the dealer had to actually apply for the extension. The basic warranty, I think could be extended up to 18mo./18,000mi. The GM Protection Plan was an extra cost Service Contract that covered the vehicle for a certain period of time after the factory warranty ran out(and under some circumstances, DURING the waranty). When it was presented to the custonmer at time of delivery, usually by the F&I Manager, the customer, if he didn't want the Plan, had to sign a paper officially declining the GMPP and it was kept on file. This was done to protect the dealer and factory from future litigation in the event of a an out-of-warranty failure.
Try calling Chevrolet Customer Assistance at 1-800-222-1020 and ask them if the car originally had GMPP. To further complicate things, some of the "High End" models like Cadillac came standard with GMPP, maybe the Vette did too(?)- Top
