71 ZR1

Was at a clients house today, and noticed he had a lot of car pics and stuff. Come to find out he had owned a huge chevy/corvette dealer in paramus NJ.

Saw a little model of what appeared to be a 70-72 gray convert with a LT1 hood. Told me he has that car, and its 1 of 8 ZR1's in 71, and the only convert. Anyone up on the 71's?

I'm very interested in these cars as well. Here is what I know. At last count 15 of the 25 built '70 ZR1's are known, 4 of the 8 '71's are known and 11 of the 20 '72's are known. These figures may have changed, I am aware of one more car not accounted for yet.

I have 5 magazines that have indepth articles about some of these cars. Car Craft's series Corvette volume 4, number 3 July 1987 has an article on all three years, written by our NCRS editor Wayne Scraba. VETTE magazine did an article on the ZR1 series by Martyn Schorr in July '87. VETTE magazine followed up with another story on ZR1's written by Wayne Scraba in January '90. Corvette Fever magazine had a nice article written on the ZR1's series of LT-1's by our own member Sal Carbone in August '91, and featuring the car you spoke of. And last, a special tribute issue from Vette magazine, titled DUNTOV The Man Behind The Corvette. Printed in 1996, has an article on both ZR series cars.

The ZR1 LT-1 cars are also talked about in an article in a past Vette Vues issue as well.

These cars are also a subject of interest with Drew Papsun and you may want to contact him as well.

Thanks. Saw Sal's in vette fever back then. Not as up on 71's as 70's.

This client of mine has a long vette history. Just never put 2 and 2 together with him and the dealership.(originally his dad's) Told him I want to see it.

I would imagine both Drew and Sal (and me too -- no imagination on my part) would have an interest in the numbers from that car. Whatever you can get without hacking off the owner would be nice.

If you can get a look at the car and it appears to be a legitimate ZR-1, I would be very interested in the configuration of the crankshaft pulley. Specifically, is it a stamped steel type pulley or is it a cast iron pulley?

We were both in a bit of a rush when we talked. If "corvette" didn't come up in saying goodbye, the hour or so we spent on the subject wouldn't have happened.
I will speak to him about seeing the car. Nice guy, shouldn't be a problem.Just have to work on the when.
