    1968 Corvette (Vin # 194678S400542)

I am the owner of a 1968 corvette. I am searching for specific information about this vehicle. Information which I believe to know that is true. The vehicle was produced in June 1967 and by the vin # it is under the first 300 produced of the 30,000 corvettes produced for 1968. It is a 300 Hp-4 sp green convertible car with black interior. It has no power accessories and has a white convertible top, has no ac and has an am radio.

Now to the mythical questions: I am trying to find out what week of production the vehicle was made? How many 1968 convertible corvettes were produced during production before this vehicle (if any)? Futher myth is this vehicle was used as a promotional vehcile (toured by GM for 1968 promotion, used for promotional photos or sold/used as a celebrity vehicle by GM.) Does anyone have any suggestions to find fact about this vehicle.

    Any information would be appreciated.

per the Corvette Black Book, Sept. 67 ended with the last vin for that month of 400905 There were almost twice as many Convertables made in 68 as Coupes, so it seems likely there were many other convertables made before this one.

Do you have any documentation that came with the car? Can you back track previous owners? There's not much else you can do.

Do you have the Protect O Plate or Tank Sticker? Original Dealer / GM paperwork?

My 68 was sold initially to the GM Tech Center, and I do have some Tech Center Paperwork, and very early dated pictures of my car along with statements from the first owner (after the Tech Center).

    Hope that helps?

    Good Luck,

    Steve

St. Louis was building '68 Corvettes in June, 1967? That's a new one on me. I have a '67 that was built in July of '67. So St. Louis was building both '67's and '68's simultaneously? PT

Your 1968 was not produced in June of 1967. It was produced during September, 1967 and was likely produced sometime during the last week of September, probably toward the beginning of the week. You can check further for the BODY build date by looking at the trim tag located in the driver's side forward door jamb area. It will have an alpha-numeric code in the upper right hand corner. For your car, I would expect a code like B25 or B26.

For early 1968 most, if not all, the cars produced were convertibles. There was a design problem with the T-Tops for the coupe and this led to the production of mostly convertibles.

About the first 9,000 - 10,000 68's were all convertibles - we didn't launch the coupe until late in January, 1968.
