The alternator you described cannot be a unit originally installed on a 1963 model car. As of the date of its manufacture, no 1963 model cars were being built. So, it has to have been originally installed on a 1964 model.
The October, 1963 date is within the 6 month "window" allowable under NCRS and NCCB guidelines for your March, 1964 built car. So, I don't see how the date can be a problem.
The alternator drive end and split ring end case can be "re-aligned" by 90 degrees. This is called "clocking" in alternator parlance. It's also the reason why there were so may different alternator part numbers---for many, only the clocking was different between part numbers. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
