C3 Air Cleaner Decal - What would you do?

I still have the original air cleaner decal on my '78 L-48 but as you can see the upper left corner is gone.

The only replacement decal I could find is not 100% correct - it refers to a "car" instead of "vehicle" as on the original.

Per the JG the "Keep your GM vehicle all GM" is correct for my car.

    So what would you do...

    1. leave the original the way it is?

    2. cut the upper left corner off the incorrect replacement and add to the original to make the original complete?

Which option do you think would receive the greatest amount of points - originality/condition?

Option #1: leave it alone!!! You should receive all originality points and, maybe, one off for condition depending upon what it's worth.

      Bob,

For me, I would always prefer a less than perfect original example over a perfect, but incorrect, reproduction. Judges may take off for condition on the original, but for non-originality of the repro, so it's probably a wash as far as points. However, as would be my hope, some judges may not take off at all because they're happy to be able to see something original once in a while!

      Thanks,

      Bob

Re: C3 Air Cleaner Decal - What would you do?

This may get a bit academic but that's the judging process. The five dimensions of originality are:
        1. Configuration
        2. Completeness
        3. Date
        4. Finish
        5. Installation

with an assigned 20% per element.

Nice photo with great resolution. You're only talking five points for the label for originality and condition. The missing corners speak to the lack of completeness but I see portions of the date code (lower left) that suggest a 145th day of 78. So I give you credit for a date code tho condition might be an issue. Installation ok and configuration (letters, colors, etc) are what I would expect to see for an L48 in 78. Compare that (date) to your trim tag date code. Condition is fine but I might deduct one. I would deduct in terms of originality at least one and probably two for each completeness (missing) and finish since I'm not able to judge the finish of the missing corners.

I may have missed something here but here's my assessment. So out of ten, you're looking at a deduction of three points and I would write "nice original label." Others may have different perspective but it depends on what your plans are for the car. I would leave it as it unless your planning on the NCCC concourse trip.

PS...can I use this in my next maxtrix training class?

Re: C3 Air Cleaner Decal - PS

If its an obvious reproduction, inconsistent with your build date (use of Car vs vehicle)in terms of originality you would lose, configuration, perhaps finish and completeness and date code. Most likely get your condition points but you're still looking at 3-4 points for the repo vs originality and that's guessing without seeing the original or the repo.

Thanks all for your comments. Looks like the "leave it alone" has it

Tom, feel free to use it as an example for your next training class. Also, here's a copy of the repos they sell.

When it comes to things like that C2 when you have the original sticker and tire pressure sticker , Like the C1's jack instructions , Rad, warning label you get the idea . I take them to a copy store making sure the size is correct and copy them and glue them on my Corvette. Most repro's are wrong in printing and size. Most copy store carry any type paper you need to make them original , like the generator tag for a C1 selling for $9 bucks on e-bay when for that you can make up a hundred and sell the rest for $5 on e-bay. Try IT!

The latest judging manual I have says assign 5 points to the label and 5 points to the air cleaner housing assembly but as I recall all ten points are on the judging sheets on one line. Their are many things to judge on the housing and the label is just the label one item. I think you will find judges looking at all the items on the housing four or more and the label may get shorted in its assigned points so I would leave it alone and take a small hit. I like the idea of making a correct label that would be enough to fool the best judges.
