    muncie front bearing is shot

Ok the muncie I bought off e-bay is not what it was supposed to be! is anyone surprised?

I removed the front bearing retainer to discover the front bearing is missing a few balls.

    I have a few questions.

I want to installed an overhaul kit. New bearings, seals, shincros, etc. who makes the best kit?

What is the level of degree of difficulty in overhauling this tranny. Guys are telling me its easy, do it myself. Aside from the special wrench for the front bearing retainer nut, are any other special tools required?

There is a do it yourself quide available on ebay. Is this worth buying?

I purchased the Muncie rebuild instructional video from a company called Medatronics. They show how to completely rebuild a Muncie without any special tools. Additionally, I was able to purchase a complete rebuild kit from them at a very reasonable price. Their web site is www.5speeds.com

I was successful in rebuilding my Muncie even though I had never done a transmission before.

      Muncie rebuild

I also rebuilt my Muncie with the kit from 5 speeds. Also ordered the video on how to rebuild the Muncie. Never did one before and was no problem. I did use a press in the disassembly. Be sure to reposition the speedo gear in the same position it was when disassembled so your plastic gear will completely engage. Rick

        Re: Muncie rebuild

I also bought the "Muncie Basics - volume 1" video from 5 Speeds.com. It's 105 minutes. Very understandable explanations. Recommend it. I had done several Muncies before but the video was still instructive. Mine works great and no leaks. I do have a 12 ton press which is very helpful, but there is an alternate method in the video.

I recommend that you seal the countershaft case front penetration well with a sealant before reinstalling. The is the only place where it seems lots of leaks occur.

I bought my kit from Ritchie at Streewise Performance in NJ. He was very helpful. I also added Torque-Lok syncro sliders, which I recommend. They are especially helpful if your Muncie is worn at all. I put them in as a long term preventive maintenance feature.

You don't have to have the Muncie wrench to do a good job but it sure is easier and less risk of chewing up the nut and surface, which can result in leaks. I got a really great quality wrench from a Canadian EBay seller that was not too expensive (sorry don't remember the name).

This is definitely something you can tackle, if you take your time and follow the video and replace anything that is remotely worn.

        Hope this helps.

no press ? use a thick aluminum or other soft alloy block even a hard wood to "drop" the main shaft on "both directions" let the weight of the gears drive them selves off---heavy brass drift to re-install---30 years no press and it works fine
