    1967 L-79 VALVE COVER CRACKS

Hello; I have noticed a few very fine, hairline cracks (not the known casting flaw) about a half inch long above a few of the letters on my L-79 valve covers. Are these normal after 40 years? Thanks in advance for any insight.

    David,

Your description sounds pretty normal, cast aluminum will crack at the surface. However, evidence of oil seeping from any crack is a sure sign that the valve cover is no longer doing it's job and needs to be replaced.

    Hope this helps,

    Mark

My guess is that the valve cover bolts were over tightened.
