What do you guys think of this stamp pad? It's a 739 block with a Dec 18 cast date. Thanks, Mike

On the other hand...
...the more I look at the U character, I begin to see a circular, very light stamping at the top of the U. If old character was replaced with U, that might explain the "sanding marks" in that area... JMHO- Top

Re: 58 Stamp Pad
I have a higher resolution picture and it looks to me that someone ground down the last letter and stamped the U over top. The letter underneath is definately a G though. In 58 there was no "CG" code. DG was 230 hp with powerglide but there is no other suffix with a G in it. What I would like to know is do the broach marks look correct? And if they do, is it possible that the guy that stamped it on the line screwed up the stamp and just ground off the last letter and restamped it. It was the day after Christmas afterall. Mike- Top

This call can confuse...
The broach marks in the critical area are gone forever. The rest of them look pretty typical.
In this era, often the last letter of the suffix was hand stamped later in the assembly process. For that reason, the last character can look "odd" in that it might be tilted, deeper, shallower, spaced differently than the others. I almost tend to "trust" that appearance rather than the perfect gang stamp that started a few years later. There were approximately 5 different Corvette engine asys in '58 that used a (first letter) C code.
I think many engines were assembled using common parts when possible and then later, when the intake and transmission demand became clear and installed, the 2nd suffix letter was stamped by hand individually.
I have to believe some factory "errors" were corrected on stamp pads, but in my experience, I have not seen one corrected in this particular fashion - but, there is a LOT of stuff I've never seen...

Re: 58 Stamp Pad
Mike,
In 1958, there was a 'CG' engine suffix used for 283ci, m/t, o.d., 230hp, 4BBL trucks & cars. The 'CG' suffix was used again in 1960 trucks & cars for 283ci, m/t, o.d. 170hp with 2BBL carb. In 1962, it was used for Chevy II & Kingswood 283 engines coupled with m/t, 4 speed and a/c but horsepower and carbs are not listed.
This information was found at http://www.nastyz28.com/chevy-engine-code-stampings.php
