    !962 Heater motor

    Hi All

After getting my 62 vette done, I was taking it for rides and turned on my heater on a chilly day. I noticed that after running the heater motor for awhile, it seemed to turn off. This happens each time I run the heater motor for awhile. When I got back in the car and started driving, it would turn on again. When I wired my car, the heater motor is wired directly to the wire harness as per the wire diagram. Am I missing something here? Can the motor be getting hot or is there supposed to be some kind of resistor connected in between the motor and the power wire? Your help is appreciated.

Yes the motor could be getting hot, did you try to touch it right after it quit running? The resistor is in the heater switch itself, hence the low and high speed. I suppose it could be getting hot and breaking down. My 62 is far from original but mt heater wire goes from the motor to the heater switch. The wiring diagrams in the ST-12 and the assembly manual are not real clear to me how the heater is wired. It doesn't show a heater switch, does your wiring diagram show one?

      Hi Terry

My wiring is new from Lectric Limited. The Heater motor wire connects to the harness, then from the harness to the switch as far as I can remember. I never tried touching the motor to feel for heat cause it quit while I was driving.By the time I got home it would of cooled down anyways.I'm going to check my connections for loosness but I doubt thats it. I am wondering if it's the motor. Bad brushes etc. This is the original motor and has never been rebuilt.Do you know of anyone who rebuilds these?

      Thanks for your response.......John

        John, As you probably know...

...the ground function for the motor is by way of the water control cable. Some owners have added an "extra" ground wire from the center console to the motor. In any case, it might be worthwhile to check that the grounding is not compromised. Best, Dennis

They are pretty easy to take apart, clean up, and replace brushes. If the armature needs redone, any electrical shop that rewires small motors should be able to do the job.
