    C2 Glove Box Door Project

Well I have Bob Young's instructions on changing the glove box insert without drilling the peened over studs on the back(which look like rivets), so I'm going to give it a try,

As I'm a little hesitate to cutting into my original 67 glove box door, I thought I'd practice on this one first:

This is a 64-65 glove box door I recently acquired. Since I had to order the insert, I figured I'd prep and paint it first. The insert should be in next week and that will be part 2 of this project.

Stripping the door is not very easy:

The best way I found was with lacquer thinner and steel wool, with lots of elbow grease.

Then after polishing the chrome, I masked it with painter's tape and an exacto knife:

Then hung it from a rafter and painted it both sides with semi flat dash paint:

So I'm all set next week to cut out the insert with a dremel cutter and install the new insert. Stay tuned.

    Having Fun,

I'm interested in how this turns out. I have a freshly restored g/b door that was done by Corvette Spec of Md. Like an idiot I managed to put a small ding in the insert. Finding out how to put in a new insert without undoing what has already be done would be nice and much cheaper than having to send it back to be redone.

      Jerry,

I used "aircraft stripper" as available at AutoZone and many auto parts stores (see below), and it worked well. Also, after stripping it and rinsing it, I baked the whole door in the oven to make sure there wasn't any water trapped somewhere I couldn't see.
As always, I used self-etching primer on the door before I hit it with SEM Trim Black for color.

Just some additional things that I did to try to only have to do this once.

        Jerry,

I had mine done by a guy that did the body work on my '66. Didn't trust my shaky fingers to not screw it up. Ordered two inserts from Long Island. One to practice with. One for real. They arrived with a very slight dent in both. My guy was able to heat one up and smooth it out. He did modify the procedures a bit. He never removed the old insert. Just cut out the logo, trimmed the new insert to fit, slide the new insert in place and glued the logo on. Looks great.

        Good Luck
        Dave

            Patrick,

Gotta remember that stuff, next time I do my console, or when I do my original glove box. Just can't seem to hold paint on the console. Do you know if there is a special paint for the console?

            Thanks,

              Jerry,

I've never found a "better" colored paint for a midyear console. Your only luck is if you need black, then the SEM stuff works great. I've used it on a couple of 70-72 consoles with excellent results.

I use the spray bomb Sherman-Williams self etching primer (because it's the brand my FLAPS has) and it really helps adhesion and cuts out any fisheyes. You don't need it thick.
