    Frame VIN #

Hello! I was wonder if it is possible to see the VIN number that is stamped into the frame without taking the body off the frame. I was wondering where it is exactly. I know it is directly under the driver's seat. I have a 63 SWC. Can I use a mirror? Thank you for your help

    John,

Sometimes you can. Pull off your side covers and stick you fingers up there and feel around. Once you have located them try the mirror and a strong flashlight. That's what I did on my '67 conv. I found a light that had a flex shaft. The small light bulb is at the end of a wire about 8" long and about as big around as a drinking straw. If you can't read the numbers cleand it with solvent and go over the numbers with white paint or chalk. Make sure you wipe off any excess paint or chalk ...you just want to fill in the indentations.

You would not have to pull the body all the way off just up a few inches.

Good luck. Let me know. Craig

For 1963-82 the frame VIN-derivative stamping is not on the frame in the area under the driver's seat. It will be found on the driver's side frame rail APPROXIMATELY in line with the rear tire position. It is very difficult to see due to the close-positioning of the body at this point and, undoubtedly, years of accumulated grime. However, if you are patient and methodical, you may be able to clean the area and observe the stamping with small and carefully placed mirrors.

        Joe,

If I remember mine ('67) were on the outside frame rail, toward the rear on the upper half. Agree?

          John,

Joe has the right idea here; you sometimes can read the VIN stamp on the top surface of the kick-up rail in the left rear wheel well. You will have to remove the tire, and use a small inspection mirror.

I read my '70 before I pulled the body. As I remember, the stamp location is just abve the rear axle centerline. I had about 1" clearance between the frame rail and the body, but this clearance varies depending on the body/frame fit.

I was hesitant to post this earlier because I did not know if it was true for mid-years.

John, I believe there are two vin stamps on the frame. One is covered by the sill/body on one rail or the other and the second Joe refers to is seen at the driver kick-up frame location in front of the fuel line hold down clip. This is the location that the police use to check vins for stolen cars.

Yes, that's the area that I'm talking about if I'm understanding you correctly.

Bob --- You're right, 2 locations for VIN derivative on the top of the left hand frame rail. The most forward is opposite your left (lower) cheek, and is VERY hard to see without lifing the frame about 4"; the second is found in varying positions on the kick-up, in the wheelwell. Some late '65's and '66's have it about 4" forward of the rear body mount; others are roughly above the axle (anywhere the surface is relatively flat). Fuel line is on the passenger side, though, and I've never seen a VIN # there.
