    Horn relay wiring question-'67 L79

I'm replacing an aftermarket horn relay with the correct piece but I cannot remember the proper wiring position for the two plug in wires on the bottom of the relay. The red battery wire is obvious as to its location as is the black wire that attaches adjacent to the battery wire. There is a green and a black plug in wire-what is the proper location for each? My recollection when I took the aftermarket relay out is that the green wire plugged into the outer terminal and the black wire plugged into the inner terminal (closer to the radiator support). Would this sequence be correct for an original relay or would it be different? Also, would damage occur if the plug in terminals were reversed? Thanks in advance for any assistance offered.

    Here's an untouched one

on a 67 base engine. I think they are the same as an L79. But before I refinished it.

Joe - On the 837 horn relay, the front terminal on the bottom has a tab and the back one is plain. You'll note that the plastic cover on one of the wire connectors has a "U" notch on the wide face, install it on the terminal with the tab. The other wire connection should be a "slam-dunk." Pete

Mine (aftermarket) is like Jerry's although I seem to have the black and red wires upside down. I replaced the fusible link (grey) at the same time. Green is outboard from rad.

How would you know if the horn relay was bad? In other words, what symptoms would appear if this piece was no longer functional?

            Sal,

I would guess that the horn wouldn't blow, but don't know as I have never had problems with it. May someone else will chime in.

              Piece of cake...

If you've got an original Delco horn relay, then just 'read' the cover. You'll see 'S' and 'H' letter embossed one pair on each side so it's impossible to install the cap onto the relay 'backwards'. The 'S' emboss denotes the terminal post directly below runs to the horn Switch. The 'H' emboss documents the terminal post directly below supplies switched power to the horns.
