    1966 a.i.r. smog pump

    I am looking for a reference source that will allow me to determine if I have the correct smog pump on my 66 a.i.r. car. Is there a GM or other book that will let me research the casting number on the pump and determine what it came off of?

    The short answer is "NO", there isn't. Bear in mind that casting numbers are not the same as PART NUMBERS for a finished part. A CASTING NUMBER is a part number for the casting. Sometimes, this is the same as the part number for the finished part, but rarely is that true. Exhaust manifolds are often, but not always, a notable exception to the rule.

    In the case of smog pumps, many finished PART NUMBER pumps may be produced from the same castings. Especially in these early years of A.I.R. installation (1966 was THE first year) most, if not all, of the pumps for different GM applications used the same basic castings.

      Mark. Give us your numbers and we'll see if we can find your pump. Check the raised boss on the side of the pump for a machined area on the bottom side, for a date code.You'll need a mirror to see it. Give us that code also.

        Re: 1966 a.i.r. smog pump

        Thanks to Joe and Bob for your responses. I get smarter everyday....

        Bob, The casting number on the housing under the pulley is 5696211 (CFB2). The stamped number on the boss is 24552F. The stamps on the back plate include "5696132" "D8" and date of L95.

        It will be interesting to see what you find.

          The 7 digit numbers that you provided are numbers which were either a) never available as a SERVICE part or, b) are casting numbers only and were never a finished PRODUCTION component part.

          I can tell you what the "D8" means, though. The "D" refers to the old Danville, IL GM Nodular Iron Foundry. The "8" is probably a mold number for the particular mold used to cast the part you have.

          Perhaps Bob will have more information on the numbers, though.

            Mark,

            I am surprised no one else got your stamped date:

            24552F

            245th day (September 2)

            5 = 1965

            2= second shift

            F= model of the pump.

              Good one! Thanks Terry! The mystery is slowly getting solved. In my earlier post I mentioned there was a date cast on the back plate of "L95". Now I'm not so sure it doesn't read "I95" (September 9). Now I need to find out why the back plate cast date is later than the September 2nd date stamped on the housing. I don't suppose you have a reference source I might be able to get my hands on, do you?

                I am not quite sure what kind of reference source you are looking for. One for date codes - so far as I know that doesn't exist. One for repair/rebuild of AIR pumps - best I have seen is in 1967 Chassis Service Manual, but the same info might be in 1966 or 1965 CSM, I don't have those versions.

                I can not explain why the cast date on the rear is later than the stamped assembly date. That sure doesn't make sense in what we would normally think of as the pump assembly process. We are, however, assuming the stamped date represents the date of the component's completion. Maybe the rear cover went on last and the housing was stamped when the internals were put inside it. I didn't pull a 1965 calendar to get the Julian date - it came from a chart. I don't know where Labor Day was in 1965.

                Lots of possibilities there, but what is all the worry for? You are being more thorough than any judge I have ever seen. I understand your desire to learn more about your car, but we usually don't have the time to dig this deep into the dating of components on the judging field.

                  Thanks again to Joe Lucia, Bob Cook, and Terry McManmnon for all your insights. This bulletin board has just guaranteed that I will renew my NCRS membership for many years to come.

                    Re: 1966 a.i.r. smog pump

                    Terry / Mark --- This may not be pertinent to the timeframe discussed, but the problems with K19 (introduced in 1966 MY) resulted in GM Tech Service Bulletins on how to solve rough idle, popping exhaust, excessive exhaust emissions, and an objectionable "chirping" noise on early units, prior to date code 0126xx (12th day of the year 1966). In the worst case, they advise replacement of the entire pump assy. with one of a date later than 0126xx. This may not help Mark, but it may explain a few date anomolies on other K19 '66 cars.

                      Wayne,

                      How do I get copies of the service bulletins?

                        Re: 1966 a.i.r. smog pump TSB's

                        Mark --- The ones I referred to were reprinted in Aug. '93 issue of Vette Vues Magazine. Reprinting old Tech Bulletins is a feature of this publication. There are probably other NCRS members who even have extensive collections of the actual bulletins. I wish someone would print a book of (say) all Corvette-related TSB's. I find them very interesting.

                        If you can't locate a copy of that isuue of V.V., I can always snail-mail you a photocopy. Email me if you wish.

                          Thanks, Wayne. I will contact Vette Vues and see about getting the TSB's. If I am unsuccessful, I may take you up on the snailmail offer.
